If the KA is reliable, keep it as a runaround ' I don't really care about it ' sort of car and wait for a nice sporty Fiesta lump and transplant the engine......

Or can you keep the gearbox for when your missus ruins another one...

Already done! The reason I got rid of my last 3 406s was because of insurance. I don't understand why it's so expensive!

I think that's the plan. I think a sportKA engine is a more reasonable conversion for now. They are the same basic lump as the 1.3 so everything is a straight swap. Just chuck the engine in and swap the ECU over. Looking on ebay I suspect an engine is going to cost me £200 and an ECU £100.
I will have to sort the brakes out prior because they are dire, if I can find a set of cheap 16" alloys I will get some Focus ST170 discs and MK3 Mondeo capliers for a cheap 300mm conversion.

STOP! why are you saying these things? you're being GIVEN an old shitter which has a structure that will suffer catastrophic rust within the next 2 years. You're planning on spending ££££'s on it, LOADS of your precious time and for what? you've got a really nice Mondy.

Best you can do is use this thing to cart you about, sling your boots and kit in the back, slam the boot, slam the doors, park it any old how, leave it anywhere you wish and benefit from the low-cost and saving wear and tear on the mondy which you can keep really clean under a nice car cover all week.

Rust can be kept at bay for with very little effort aslong as they are solid in the first place!

And spend £500 on an engine conversion and a further £500 on brakes and suspension and you have a 'warm' hatch for very little money!

You could get a decent 406 for what that would cost, or if you fancy something really roomy and comfortable a C5 Hdi estate for about £500.00

Why do I need a 406? I have my Mondeo. Plus I refuse to pay 406 insurance prices. As soon as I turn 25 I'm going to try get my hands on a V6 saloon again but until then I have to be carefull with insurance.
I can have a but of fun with the KA for little money!

but won't a KA with upgraded engine/brakes etc bump up the price of its insurance?? put the £1000 in the bank and have a holiday with it.

Good point with the insurance, to be fair I can understand wanting to have a play with a free car like this but won't it give you something more to 'care' about once you've fettled with it? when really you want something you don't care for [Ref: steve_earwig vs Rav4 2014].

It'd be good to have a car that doesn't matter, always scared about parking mine in case some twat dings it, I get annoyed when I have to travel for business because I'm putting miles on it etc.... I've seriously considered buying a cheap runaround for that very purpose but I don't know if it's in my genetic makeup to not care about any car  . Even when I had the Suzuki I was reluctant to leave it anywhere in case it got knicked (although admittedly I wasn't bothered about car park dents on that  ), and there were always jobs to do and money to spend on it.

That's part of why I have a 406. It cost me £900 (ignoring the not insubstantial jobs clutch *cough* snapped cam belt *cough* ) and while it isn't immaculate it is a nice looking car and lovely to drive. And I don't throw a fit whenever I see a new scratch or accidentally pull too far forward when parking it.

I, along with many others here i guess regularly peruse eBay car listings dreaming of newer metal, but when it comes down to it the 406 does an excellent job while losing next to no money. and I also don't need to pay for insurance and watch the depreciation on the "weekend car" i hardly ever use..

You have a nice car in the Mondeo that suits you, you enjoy and have paid good money for the privilege of owning. So use it for what it is meant for rather than letting it sit while you make yourself suffer in a lesser vehicle.
