The 407 should have been the Citroen C5 it's so odd. It's definitely difficult to live with, but Iove the rather odd and laid back driving position, the light cabin, and the bi-turbo is brilliant.
265 mile round trip in the 508 today and it needed two regens -- although one was right at the start and the other right at the end.
I only have statistics for the 407, but soot accumulates about twice as fast on local journeys. Trip computer says 82mpg.
In the end the 508 was only uesd as a shopping trolley. He mentioned he was disappointed that he'd never gotten to take it anywhere. I'm sure that if I hadn't been aware of the DPF and kept an eye on the soot counter and taken it out when it needed to to a regen then it could have got expensive.

Re: 508
I have no idea what our C4 with DPF gets up to but being driven mostly around locally I'm amazed it hasn't thrown a wobbly yet, it does about 10,000 miles a year with quite a few motorway runs but again could spend 8 weeks pottering around.
Think it threw up a SERVICE lamp only once which is suppose to indicated a failed regen or the DPF nearly full but it soon sorted itself out
