I get roughly 35 to 40mpg out of my 1.8 16v, i get 500miles from a tank of fuel, which includes mixed driving. On a run i would hopefully get alot more to the gallon. Overall i am very impressed with the economy especially from a big saloon car :)

Well I did purchase a X reg Rapier 90HDi last week and im getting on crap commute at worst 36mpg.

On the motorway at 70 i can get about 52-55mpg.

I feel I could get more but it needs a service especially the oil so may get a few more MPG's!

Hey Bruce,

Hope you're not commuting between those annoying roadworks on the M5! My MPG dropped a bit because of them...

Hi All,

Long time no speak.

This topic interests me greatly. I have been doing a few quick calcs my 406 hdi 110 will do on average 40mpg. That is my daily commute to and from work.Which consists overal of 30 mins on a fast dual carrageway average speed around 80 to 90. and more built up driving in 30 and 40's and stop start traffic.

Not really that economical for a diesel  I have seriously been driving on a go slow changing gear around 1500 rpm. I would expect to be getting around 50mpg. But we will see. I will report my findings once my fuel light is on

Welly how many miles do you do a week? I do on average around 200 miles a week. I think with fuel prices as they are not sure diesel really is the winner anymore!!! :supafrisk:

The only performance mods to my 406 are Superchipped uprated flywheel and clutch.

Im certain that an HDI 110 should be capable of 60mpg depends on your driving style.

Please note my post above :arrowu: :arrowu: :arrowu: quick calc

Ie my on board computer my brain

My average mpg based on my normal day to day driving is 45.4 mpg. Have sat down and done the sums :supafrisk: .

As Im on a go slow really I am. (driving at the speed limit on motorways and dual carrageways)I estimate to hit around 54.5mpg and thats driving very steady. Cant really see my pug acheiving much more. Also to note its due a full service so I guess mpg will increase once my mate gives the pug his magic :cheesy:

Rappy - check your tyre pressures to make sure.

Mine used to average 38 and then 50 - ish on a run.

I've done 6000 miles in 8 months now so I do about 175 miles per week average but at least 1000 miles of that has been 'special' journeys so some weeks should be as low as 120 miles.

The volvo never seems to drop below 26mpg (33 on a run) and I don't exactly hang about :supafrisk:

It's costing me £32.51 per week @ 175 miles and the 406 would have cost £21.67 which, judging by what I'm putting in, is bang on right.

It's a tenner a week more but, so far, I've had no unexpected repairs and as far as I can tell the car has most likely increased in value because of what happened in January this year with car sales :cheesy:

Since i've come from a T5, Welly - What T5 do you have? IIRC a S40 T5 which is the 2.5?

On my 850 T5 I used to get 20mpg on my commute (5 miles there and back) in rush hour traffic which is about 1 mile of 30-40mph built up and the last 1.5 mile in literally stop start crawling. Sometimes it would take 25 minutes to do 2.5 miles one way. Really bad.

The 406 HDi 90 on the same dropped to 36.5MPG. So thats 15MPG more and I drove the 406 'harder' than the T5 on the commute.

Now, over a month just on my commute its aprox 100 miles I would save only a little... say £15-20 at most. Not a huge amount but makes more sense than running a 2.3 T5 mapped to 260hp!

But so far I put in £40 and ive done 140 miles so far and the computer is saying 230miles to go!!!!!

So because of this I can drive more without thinking ill need to fill up AGAIN in the T5 for the commute.

Sure, the 406 is a LOT slower but the surge between 1800-2200rpm is great. After that its a bit flat but I can live with that due to the savings im making whenever I drive the 406.

Sometimes I do a 410 round trip to Hull which in my T5 I could get 32.4 taking it steady or 28 giving it some every now and again.

The 406 is doing 48mpg and thats not driving for mpg figures.

The 406 is also well over due a service in which im hoping I can get 3-5mpg more out of it.

My tyre pressures are 35psi all round. But I think they should be 33psi? (406 HDi90 Saloon 195/65/15)

What are the remaps/tuning boxes like?

Driving on a go slow my car has achieved.................................... 51.9mpg    .

So if I drive my car, as I class normal I was hitting 45mpg and having a whole lot more fun also.

Looks like I will be back to 45mpg

I must admit I was expecting more driving very steady. I never went above 1500 rpm only in 5th when I finall got upto 70mph  . Which actually is 65mph on my sat nav.

Bruce T remaps are a must. I have had many quick cars and the 406 is the slowest car I have owned. Also its the longest I have owned a car well over 6 years and also the most miles nearly 200k. . For me get a remap followed by uprated clutch and flywheel. In the words of my mate V6 grunt with economy. No lag. Just a kick up the backside If you decide to boot it. Also remove the connector from the fuel pump. Which increases the boost of power low down.
