Re: R.I.P. Black beauty :-(
Shite Sup, that's a hell of a shunt on the back end, and ripped metal on the front wing!!
For what it's worth, I think the 407 is a really nice drive. How it fares reliability wise, I don't know. But in all honesty, we can't really call the '6 the most reliable car in the world.
For driveability, I prefered the 407 over the Mondeo. And it felt better screwed togehter (and that's comparing a brand new 06 plate Mondeo with a screwed 05 plate 407 pool car).
But I'm truely gutted for you, and after the coupe as well, not the best of luck.

That's not as mad as it sounds, they fix worse here too. I don't think the inserwerant would pay, they'd just write it off and pay up the book price, then Supa should be able to buy it back for its scrap value. Looks like a 2005 407 goes for 3.5 grand, maybe this could be the budget for fixing the car you want, rather than putting up with something you don't...Harshan wrote:However one thing is for sure, if this accident took place here in SL chances are higher that you could get it repaired.
...or maybe I'm confused by how cheap cars are there

Translates to: I'm an incompetent driver who hasn't a clue how to frikken drive and was too busy checking my lippy to bother with such trivial things as watching the road ahead.A woman from the car behind came rushing up saying she was sorry, she didn't know what happened etc.

Assessor has been out to the car - it's not good.
They have quoted £9680 to repair it, but just £1700 to replace it, regardless of its job or that the next has to be under 5 years.
Barstewards.

Re: R.I.P. Black beauty :-(
Get a 407, but stick to petrol. Unless you are doing interstellar mileage (about 20k+ PA), the cheaper and less frequent servicing and massively greater reliability make the petrol the cheaper proposition to own, and they're cheaper to buy used. I've owned both burner and petrol 407s so can confirm this first hand. while you might not get a big settlement for the 406, you look set to get something for your injuries which'll give you the spondies you need.
Avoid both the 4 and 6 speed slush models - not an especially pleasant box.
Glad you lived to fight another day feller. Good luck.

Re: R.I.P. Black beauty :-(
Turbo lag, you'd want to at least double that mileage
The way things are looking at the moment is that I'm relying on that quote being an over-quote. I'm not suggesting cutting corners at all but I'm thinking maybe the back end could be done for half that amount, the front damage is negligable, a new wing and headlight, possibly bonnet and that's that bit sorted. I know a few people who sell thatcham approved panels, so parts aren't a problem.
So it's all down to if I can get a couple of quotes way under about 5 grand OR...
I fight it out with the insurers, argue the case is a non fault one, they have already asked how much the cheapest equivalent car would cost that could be plated, and so far it's looking at around £4500 for a 407 or 607 exec on a 55 plate.
What do you guys reckon, push for the 406 or a new one?

Re: R.I.P. Black beauty :-(
Supa is a taxi driver, so she does do massive mileages (ISTR about 35-40kpa?) in urban conditions, where a petrol will return around half the economy of a diesel...turbolag wrote:Get a 407, but stick to petrol. Re: R.I.P. Black beauty :-(
Mine gives about 33mpg urban (less on a genuine nose to nose rush hour crawl), so 7 or 8 less than the 2.0 HDI, so the difference isn't huge. The cost will add up in the HDis favour over time, but then the petrol doesn't have a DMF or an FAP so there's less expensive parts to inevitably require attention over that period.
Lets say that at 100k miles a 2.0 HDi will require £800 worth of DMF and FAP maintenance (this is a very conservative figure for a vehicle used as a taxi). that £800 buys 157 litres of petrol, which at 33mpg gives the petrol driver a further 5181 miles of driving, and that's without factoring in the cheaper fuel, cheaper insurance and cheaper servicing of the petrol, or the likelyhood of breakdown or faults which greater afflict the HDi. An increasing number of folk over on 407owners, including myself, have gone back to a petrol 407 when their HDi became due for replacement.
the 2.0 HDi isn't the huge money saver in the 407 that it was in the 406.

Re: R.I.P. Black beauty :-(
On my drive to work (100% urban in rush hour), my V6 (remember, it can do an easy 50mpg on the motorway!) manages 19mpg on a good day using premium fuel and my tubby managed about 16mpg. My Golf TDi does 45mpg everywhere (including the motorway!!!) on cheaper diesel. No that's not a mistake, I pay less per litre for diesel than for petrol
Don't the EW12J4 (2.2 petrol) and/or EW10D (2.0 HPI petrol) engines have FAP filters too, or am I thinking of something else?
