thinking of buying a 406 2.0 hdi estate

i will ask one last thing. the car only had one key and the buttons were a little messed up, i know you can buy the shell and swap all the internals and the blade over for about £4, is this an easy job? also can i get a spare made up and how much would it be? it wouldnt have to be a remote one as it dosent really bother me, the remote didnt work when i tried it on this car but i suspect its because the button was all taped up, the car opened at the door and started fine

any last minute advice? what to look out for on a test drive, should i push for a 12 month mot (can it be done when theres 4 months remaining?)

just done an insurance quote for the 406 and it came back at £99 a month, is this a going rate or what? i currently pay £55 on my megane, i know its a bigger car etc but come one, that a grand left to pay before renewal

thats about what i pay for my 406s insurance, they are in a high rating.

after taking a second look and a test drive its not the one for me, it sounded fine, and drove ok, the clutch seemed like it might be on its last legs, was slipping a little. some electricals were dodgy to say the least, i can see why it was dropped from £1999 to £995, the interior was ok, the seats needed a clean, the drivers seatbelt was filthy, someone with mucky hands owned this car. didnt have and history. he wouldnt mot it for 12 months so it ran outin december even though i said i would pay for it doing so something didnt seem right there, he did offer me £950 for my megane which was a decent offer, especially part ex, but all his cars seem a little over the odds, id say the car is probably only worth £600 based on other ones ive seen on trader etc in this condition. for example theres another one local thats £995, has 100k miles and a full dealer sercive history, full mot etc and 1 year newer. i may go and look at taht one tomorrow. the insurance does put me off a little, i need the car for the extra space for camping but if im forking out an extra £45 a month on top of the £55 i pay now for insurance i wont be going camping all that often. ill keep my eye out for something a little newer, maybe a little cheaper on the insurance front. thanks for all the advice, link to the car is below if anyone else fancies haggling for cash, i bet he would take £700 cash, the bodywork is pretty decent other than the small dent on the boot and stone chips on the front. 3 good tyres one questionable, cd player dosent work the on/off nob is dead. but the a/c is spot on lol

More the case, farmerpug, that the 1.6HDi is under hugeeee stress to power such a big car.

Used to be diesels were reliable because they weren't under stress, big lazy engines that went on forever.

Yep the HDi 90 is an example of big lazy engine, 2.0 but only firing out 90bhp.

The fleets love the small diesel engines because they're cheap to tax. Thats why the likes of the Megane 1.5DCi estates are used almost as works vans.

Yep. The C4 and 308 are actually quite heavy.

The 308 for example weighs 1327 kg, as compared to the 406 which weighed 1335 kg.

Compare that to a Citroen ZX for example, which pulled along nicely with the XUD, it weighed 1046 kg.

the old zx turbo d was a rocket, the only trouble the 2 that were in our family gave was for things like broken door handles, central locking jamming silly things never mechanical.

the 308 wow thats quite hefty they will need to switch to aluminium to reduce the wheight, i like the idea of the c4 1.6 110 because on paper its got good performance and great economy, is the new 2.0 136 hdi engine still good?

My ZX had a blown solenoid which meant one of the doors was manual locking, and the boot mechanism jammed once but fixed by the Peugeot garage in St Andrews.
It seemed to need glow plugs every winter, but that was probably the Scottish climate, and it needed an alternator at 110k.
Other than that a great car that I probably should've hung on to for longer.

110bhp from a 1.6 engine is going to be hugely stressed, a recipe for disaster.

The 407 of the other half's da is the 136bhp unit, a flying machine but a nice big cruiser too.
