I can now state with complete authority that the speedometer, cruise control and trip computer are completely unaffected when you disconnect the reversing light switch

Just to update from some information gleaned by Coupe Club members, the 20MB02 box will probably fit, but its final drive ratio in 6th (650:1) is higher than 5th on the ML5T/C (610:1), so fitting it would be pointless.
The 20MB04 is the one you need for this conversion, which has a final drive ratio of 534:1 in top gear (and 647:1 in 5th)

The 20MB02 was fitted to the 2.0 136 HDi engines in the later C5s (2004-onwards) and Peugeot 407s.
The 20MB04 was only fitted to one particular trim level of the 2.2 136 HDi C5 from around 2001-2003 (most of them had a 5 speed), making it pretty difficult to find. Why this box didn't make it into the 406 range is unknown.

I didn't think that the 02 was an option then. I always figured that the one that was fitted to the 6 speed 2.2 C5s was the best bet anyway as it's the same engine. They only started fitting it to the C5s in 2003, by which time the 406s days were already numbered (407 was 2004 on) which would explain why it never made it into the 406.

I initially thought the issue with the 20MB02 was the lack of a driveshaft speed sensor, but the 04 doesn't have one either and both 'boxes can have it swapped easily from your 5-speed. The final drive ratio difference is pertinent and reflects the tendency to move to 17" or 18" wheels, so you have options to arrive at your choice of gearing.
I'm becoming more convinced that the sticking point is at the engine end - the MB02 fits a DW10 variant, DW12's have a bigger flywheel, clutch and (I think), different slave cylinder. It also looks like the gearbox proper and clutch housing / diff assembly can be separated - maybe it's possible to marry up the 02 gearbox with the ML5C diff/clutch assy.
This also suggests you could fit an 02 to a remapped 110 with big wheels.......

I'm guessing that you've bought a box from something with the 2.0 16v 136 HDi then? Is the gearbox from a 110 HDi significantly different to that of a 2.2 HDi? If not, then it should all be ok. Worst case scenario is, if it doesn't work sell it on again. Or find somebody with a 307 & a 5 speed box that's up for an upgrade.

No, I've bought a 20MB04 from a late 2003 C5 2.2 HDi that expired with engine failure at 76k, but didn't expect to find one of these for sensible money, hence my earlier research into the more common / cheaper 02 box. As at least one guy on the coupe forum has done precisely this swap, it should be straightforward........we'll see.
