It'd be expensive though as there's two pre cats on the V6 J4S engine.

4 actually!
2 pre catalyser and 2 post catalyser.....
Only two would be needed for that screw in mod though...although it has to be said that most decat pipes don't include the threaded boss either...

I think they should be looking at airliners emissions if they are worried about air pollution and not our cars...... a Boeing 747 with cat & aviation fuel particulate filters
and bring in a tax disc for them based on emissions... £9,234,122 for 6 months or £9,000,000 for 12 months ?
what do you think? and one tax disc per engine ofc!

But a cows fart is completely carbon neutral!OllieNZ wrote:They tried that in NZ called the fart tax lolBailes1992 wrote:Or cows?Doggy wrote: .....or maybe the odd volcano
You see the cows get their energy from grass. When grass grows it converts CO2 into Oxygen. The grass then has an Oxygen debt which the Daisy pays off by farting

It's the same story with Biofuels. If the Government were that bothered about the enviroment they would be pushing biofuels such as Bioethanol and Biodiesel.
Any car run on a biofuel is carbon neutral. This is because as the plants that we use to produce the fuel grow they take in Carbon Dioxide and breath out Oxygen.
And they could solve all our problems with hydrogen! But clearly would rather just tax us instead.

Re: New Mot Rules for 2014
Didn't they decide there was more CO2 emissions from rotting leaves than cars? (aside from Cows farting).
I followed an old Ford Sierra recently and the smell was shocking, it wasn't really smoking but I suppose it was just the un-catalyzed eggsauce fumes. I dread to think what it'd be like with no CATs these days, I guess there wasn't so many cars around in the late 80's when cars were 'raw' but even so.....

Er... Yeah I was in Russia a few years ago in a non-touristy part, where not everyone drove the latest and greatest but the old clapped out Ladas and the stench by the side of the road was horrible! This year it was a lot better...due to far less old cars on the road.

Re: New Mot Rules for 2014
My E55 is fully decatted.
2 primary and 2 secondary cats.
Started a couple of years ago when the front Cat broke up inside and started to rattle - I spoke to Mercedes and said "I'd like 2 new pipes please as I may as well get the other one replaced" - Sure they said, we can do that.. £1200+VAT
So I decided to have the Cats removed from the pipes and seam welded back up so it looks OEM - ever since then, at MOT time the car has a normal full test but we manage to have a cup of coffee during emissions testing section
I mean after all, the car is a bloody great 5.5 litre V8 so was never going to be carbon friendly
( Oh and it sounds better )
Subsequent managed to get hold of two complete downpipes which are in the garage should they ever need to be fitted.
Oh and under the current RFL fees - it cost the same every 12 months to tax that car as it does the 406... go figure

Re: New Mot Rules for 2014
looks like they've got a device for checking Dpf's.
Re: New Mot Rules for 2014
Yes, in theory temperature checking before and after the DPF might provide a clue. But a quote earlier in this thread said that if there is anything other than a visual inspection, it'll involve tapping on the unit and listening.
I don't think MOT stations carry IR thermometers as standard anyway?

Re: New Mot Rules for 2014
If the test will involve tapping on the DPF what if you just drilled out the centre of the unit with a big core bit, leaving a bit of DPF material around the edge, it would sound the same, but the inside of the exhaust would still have plenty of room for the gasses to flow through.
On the 2.0 HDi there is no DPF but there is something in the exhaust, is that the CAT?
