Had a look at the hubs today, the braking surface on the disks is cracked around the edge and the pads are down to the metal.

I adjusted the handbrake on my saloon back in september, it got through the mot, and will hold the car on a hill but thats it, the drum setup has a much thicker backplate, the backplate on the drum in disk brakes is much flimsier by comparison.

The problem with these handbrakes and handbrakes in general is the way they are set up and adjusted or how badly they are setup and adjusted.

I had a 406 for 6 years and did going on for 70,000 miles in it without a single issue with the handbrake (drum in disc type.)

What happens....and I come across this constantly, especially if the car has been main dealer serviced before I got the job...is that the adjusters are set wrong.
Usually the cable adjusters get tightened without the in drum adjusters being adjusted correctly first, making the pivots have less pull on the shoe mechanism....less leverage in other words so that the shoes aren't being pulled tightly enough on the drum. This applies to all cars with a normal handbrake, drum only or drum in disc...discounting the electronic ones...the disc only calipers still need adjustment by levering on the brake pads with the handbrake cable adjusters slackened off then the brake pedal pumped up to operate the in caliper adjuster...then the cable can be set.

As written in the how-to you need to slacken all the cable adjusters then adjust the adjusting wheels inside the drum then set the cables up.

When I got the estate I bought from Dai the handbrake wasn't very good on that, but I set everything up correctly and I now have a perfect handbrake, 4 clicks on the handbrake lever ratchet!

The drum only type are certainly a better option, but even these suffer the same problems if the cable is adjusted without the in drum adjuster being set before the cable is adjusted. I see it all the time....the cable adjusted with the adjusting nut wound right down the adjuster threads.

Brake discs are fairly cheap now, adays if you hunt round,
so using ones that are worn/2nd hand is just waste of time and money as they just chew down the new pads,

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

Still up in arms what I am to do with the car.

Car is causing me a rather large headache!

My girls are coming this evening, at 5pm so chances are I won't be online now until Tuesday.. We're celebrating Christmas on Monday as they go to their Dads for Christmas on Monday evening and don't return until 30th!

Anyway, take care everyone!!
