Well the End is Nigh for the lag

the past few days its been Lagging in power, tried Everything, fuel treatments and all the B/s waste of Space. and Money (Dont buy any of this crap ,, all your cleaners come free with the derv you put in your tank, :!: )
Changed the Fuel filter 34 quid

took it for a Blast on the Motorway, Coil light came on, loss of power, just limped it home,
looks like the The turbo is Fubard, sooo much for the last owner spending nearly 800 notes on a new one on it, :?
they must be Made of Choclate as ive not thrashed the car,

ah well .. iwill bin it on ebay, search goes on for a decent 406., not many of them out there tho :(

Oh dear, I've heard things about the DCi engines not being as strong as PSA units - maybe it's true? I'm not aware of any turbo failures on 406's, only miss-diagnosed turbo swaps.

Are you sure its the turbo and not something simple like the MAF sensor, wouldnt there be a lot of blue smoke belching out if it was the turbo.

your right, Fp,

Theres No smoke mate, just lack of turbo, no power what so ever,
and under strain it just went into limp Mode, coil light comes on and a Squiggly line above it, dont know what that is tho,

Its been playing up for a few days, the strange thing is if the Weathers damp or cold it was running well
in warm /hot weather it starts playing up, :?

Ive Asked on the Renault forum:
But there sugesting A clogged egr Valve.,

But What confuses me is when theyre clogged/faulty a Car normaly smokes dont it?
theres no smoke,
once theyre disturbed you need Renault clip to reset them idont fancy buying one, itd be cheaper to send it in a Garage if that be the case, :(

iwill look for a cheap obd2 code reader me thinks and see if any Fault codes are logged,

after that iwill just weigh the car in , shame realy as its in mint condition :(

The clios effing about aswell, in the humid weather, up hills in second gear it enters limp mode or whenever there is any strain it starts misfiring. It could be a renault thing :cheesy:

Im getting the same light its the heater coil with what looks like an osciliscope above it, that is the light for the Engine management on renaults, so its possibly an electrical issue, get it plugged in to a computer somewhere and see what the car says is wrong.

About the renault forums suggestion, it could be a clogged egr valve different diesel engines seem to develop different symptoms when they are blocked i think, so smoke isnt always guaranteed. But the code reader would be the best bet, there is no point in guessing.

My cousin bought a renault clip, its not very user friendly and its functions seem limited, and the RF people dont like to promote the cheap clip devices off ebay

Cheers fp.

Strangely the coil light only apeard after changing the fuel filter.
its not a cheapo one neither so it carnt be faulty,

This thing primes it self with an old type electric pump. not seen one of these on a Modern car., but oddly it has one, (No lift pump in tank either)
so idoubt its that,

the egr, ive put my finger inside the intake with the pipe off and can feel the Egr theres no caked on soot or sludge evident
so im going to leave that alone me thinks,

its the oil breather system that is the problem on Renaults, (some Volvos too) :(
Stupid desighn, Garrett have been making turbos for Donkeys years so icarnt see the logic in them building turbos that will eat them selves
for a certain number of Renault and volvo cars,

The HDi can throw a wobbly when it runs out of fuel, changing the filter is a bit like running out of fuel too.

Maybe it has thrown a low fuel pressure fault - these can clear themselves after a few driving cycles.

Sorted it 8)

The chimney was blocked

Took the Egr out,. not a hard job, took me 10mins with a wood chizzel to persuade it out,
the soot that fell out was unreal,

Car run like a bag of spanners for 20miles or so and then it just picked its feet up,
46mpg round town, it was 34-38 mpg so a definate improvement,

Hi,
the Egr on the lag is easy to get at,

its on the side of the intake, so you remove it from the side of the engine, not a hard job,
as for cleaning it ijust threw it in a ice cream tub filled with neat diesel cleaned it off with paintbrush and some wire wool,

As for the Egr spray cleaner, ithought about using it on the lag but iwasnt Brave enough,
icouid just imagine itd make it knock , not something id want on such a Weak engine

Ive asked a derv mechanic about the egr cleaners,

he rekons best option is to remove them and clean them off,

idont know how that egr cleaner works, iwonder if it gets the engine to run hot so it burns off the carbon,

iknow when itook the egr out on the lag, it was like opening the door on a coal fire thats been burning all night all the soot just fell out

not sure egr cleaner spray wouid of got rid of that lot,
