Lights flash, but Texton alarm unit just quietly ticks-Help!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Lights flash, but Texton alarm unit just quietly ticks-Help!

Post by lakemaligne »

I have a 1996 2 Ltr 16v MK1 406 and the original Peugeot Texton alarm (Model number 96182344.8) no longer makes a noise when the alarm is activated. The head lights flash, but the sounder only makes a quiet ticking sound . I tested the internal battery in the sounder unit which turned out to be dead. I have applied 12v directly to the sounder unit terminals and still get the same quiet ticking sound. So I purchased a new sounder unit from my Peugeot dealer and fitted it , but this makes no sound at all when the alarm is activated. Peugeot told me that the new unit should work in my 406 ,but the original unit is light grey, bigger, and has a key switch and a different model number (96266287.8), where as the new unit is black and does not have a key switch. Have Peugeot given me the wrong part or is the cars alarm control unit faulty.

Has anyone got a working alarm sounder unit with key, that would fit my car please.

Whats your chassis number mate? Also whats the part number of the sounder that you purchased? I can find out if you have the right one on servicebox. The part number should be on the box or bag that the part came in. Not the model number on the unit itself

Eoin,
The only number on the box is 6 6 8 0 . 9 7
VIN number is V F 3 8 B R F V E 8 0 2 0 1 4 4 8.

Do the symptoms point to the sounder being faulty or the control unit itself do you think.

Yep you've got the right part. Number 6680.97. Perhaps an auto electrician can help if you're not sure. At least you know you didnt throw your money away on a wrong part

Knowing nothing more than has been said in this thread, I'd say it sounds like the sounder is just a speaker (maybe with amp) and the texton thing is just giving it a DC voltage instead of the alarm sound? Maybe?

Eoin, it's just a thought, but as i got zero volts on my meter when i buzzed all the terminals on the new sounder unit's socket, the internal battery is probably dead as it's beeen sat on a shelf for ages. Maybe the internal battery needs to be fully charged in order to operate the sounder.I am only guessing here, but perhaps the car's electrical system needs to slowly trickle charge the battery when in circuit for a few days. What do you think, could it do any harm!

MJB,I see what you are saying ,the Alarm control unit which i think is mounted in the dash somewhere should provide an alternating voltage to the sounder ,which this just ampifies up to go to the speaker. What puzzles me is the original sounder emits a quiet rapid ticking sound when the alarm is activated, where as the new one is silent. I wonder if Texton have a technical web site i could browse. Thanks for the input,It's got me thinking.I know alarm systems are usually ignored when they go off in car parks, but as i am sure the rest of the system ,sensors, deadlocks, etc, are working ok,I would like to get it all operating for when its sat on my drive.I will let you know what i find out.

Mmmmm. To be honest, I dont know a lot about alarms. But if there is an internal battery, then can you access it? What type of battery is it?

Eoin, The battery and pcb is under a ton of resin,so would have to wreck unit to get at it.Going on other threads i have found ,the battery in NiCad rechargable.
