D8 Airbag W/L

My bro's '98 1.9TD SX Estate has had the airbag light flashing since he got it & it doesn't seem to be the connectors under the seats. MOT's due shortly & while popular opinion says it's not an MOT failure, he'd obviously prefer not to have the distracting 'flasher'.

Searching on here, it seems the next most common problem is a duff airbag ECU, (though enough 'victims' feel they paid for one that didn't turn out to be the only problem, to make you wonder).

Thinking there might be somewhere the lamp could be disconnected without having the instrument pod out, I checked HBoL's diagrams, but they're completely useless. So i thought disconnecting the airbag ECU might be easier than removing the lamp.
Duly disconnected battery, then ECU, battery back on, starts it up & no flashing airbag light - now it's on steady all the time

Opinions please - take the clocks out & loose the lamp, shell out a few € & download some decent diagrams off ServicePox?, any other thoughts?

FWIW my Chinese PP2000 clone talks to his car OK on checking the airbag ECU, it reports a short to earth on the drivers airbag & an open circuit on the passenger one as 'permanent' faults, plus two intermittent faults with the ECU itself, (which could be disconnecting the battery as I did it twice).

If you have a leccy screwdriver, then taking the clocks is only 5 min job, so i'd go that route if you've exhausted all options

I've just got rid of my airbag light issue, but that was a dodgy pre-tensioner
