is this legit

Post by Col »

ok Guys, I've got a bit of confusion here as to what I may have just bought...

I was after a D8 V6 and found a suitable candidate on ebay - it appears to be a d8 by outward appearances, but the advert is for a car with a year 2000 "W" plate

is this possible as I thought the D9 took over in 1999 ?

could this be a late registered car or perhaps some kind of crossover model, as the advert also claims it has 210bhp ?

Also, I hate you, you nice car-having bar steward :P

[EDIT] So if it's the same displacement, where do the extra 20 horses live? Somewhere in the management system?

That car's falsely advertised. It is a later example of a D8 with 194bhp ES9J4 engine, not the 210bhp ES9J4S. Either it was sitting around for the best part of a year before being registered, or the plate did not originally belong to the car (making the sale illegal). As it is, the reg plate looks dodgy

It doesn't appear on my screen to have two remote keys either, which probably means one key to open the doors (no remote central locking) and another to start the engine, with no spares. The engine looks filthy for only 70k too, and it'll probably be wanting a cambelt too (£400+ parts, mucho labour - 9 hour book time)

If it were advertised as the 1999 car it almost certainly is (if not older) it'd be worth about £800

Since the car's definitely NOT as advertised (194bhp not 210bhp), consider reporting it to ebay and walking away from the deal! At the very least look up it VIN on servicebox and do a HPI check on the reg before parting with your money

Thanks for the info guys

obviously I have some serious concerns now, but on the plus side no money has changed hands yet

would you advise me to just walk away or take these concerns up with the seller ?

See what the seller's got to say; might be interesting. Some of it may even be true.

Occasionally the DVLA can have things a bit wrong though.

To be fair it is quite possible that the car sat around at a dealers as the D9 rolled out as the V6 was not a big seller.

I'd be tempted to ask very nicely at a Peugeot dealer (if you can find the one it came from the better) as they have the ability to check the car's warrenty history on the computer (using the reg no.). This might confirm when it was registered and when it had its first warrenty work etc. I don't think they're obliged to tell you but if you explain your situation they may help.....

I tend to agree with Welly here. The signs point to a late registered model alright. On the other hand, it looks amazingly tidy and those late D8 execs have the plusher leather seats used in the D9's. I think it looks like a cracker of a car! The 210hp thing might be an honest mistake. Type "406 3.0 V6 bhp" into google and 210 will come up more.

On another note, after running off my mouth all the time about how no D8.5's exist. I saw a 2000 D8.5 China Blue salooon at the weekend!!! It had the front of a D8 and the arse of a D9 and all the chrome side mouldings. I only drove past it so I never looked inside. I stand corrected and red faced.

Is this a D8.5?

http://belfast.gumtree.com/belfast/81/58170181.html

Claims to be a 1998 1.9 Diesel, but the photo clearly shows D9 rear lights and side repeater, chrome in the inserts, bodycoloured B pillars etc.

Of course it is possible that the picture isn't of the car whatsoever. If this is the case, why not pic a better random silver 406 picture than a small night sideview? Strange...
