Remote Locking?

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

His car only came with the spare key - the master key would be the one that has the buttons on it

I suspect that yours should have remote central locking, but without the key there's a little problem. You might want to take it to a dealer and see what they say about obtaining a replacement - though I reckon it ain't gonna be cheap

Mine had two keys:

The master key has one button - this button locks and unlocks the doors remotely
The spare has no buttons at all - it's just a key

If you have a little black dome beside the front reading lights then your 406 has Infrared keyless entry. Its crap. So in that case, I wouldnt bother getting a new key.

If it doesnt have that little black dome then you have proper radio controlled central locking which can open the doors at a nice distance and flash the hazards and maybe it has deadlocks too. Which also might mean total closure????

If so, then I would recommend a new key if you intend on keeping the car long term. You're looking at around £100 from a stealer. If you lose the spare then your gonna have to get a new key from them anyway

Battery on the way out on the key? Could be responsible for the transceiver to operate at a reduced range...

The battery is usually the first port of call. But if its not that then its the reciever behind the glove box. I'd take it out, give it a good cleaning and remove any obstructions in the way. That should help.

edit: sorry gary, do you have an infrared key (with the little black bulb on the end) or the other type?

What's the box look like?

I'm sure I saw 2 or 3 back there when putting the wiring in for the seats.
Still need to fit replacement carpet into place so ideal time to do it.

Is it a case of say using some contact cleaner on the plugs and replug in?

Well can i get something like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PEUGEOT-306-405-4 ... 563cd4025e

Is it as easy as replacing the blade and calibrating it to the car with some neat little trick with the ignition :?:
