Advice on swopping ECU needed PLEASE.

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Advice on swopping ECU needed PLEASE.

Post by lakemaligne »

I am thinking of getting an ECU from a scrap yard to replace the one in my 1996 2Ltr petrol 406 to see if it cures a long standing fault . I would like to know whether it would just be a case of removing the old one and popping in the replacement ,or would i have to do some setting up of the replacement ECU.Would it cause any problems or damage my car in any way.

I'm not sure but you may need the keys too? because of the imobiliser? you may have the keypad imobiliser but I wonder if it's still 'coded' to the ECU?

Recently we've had a member with an HDI with jerkyness and it turned out to be (in part) the spare switches/plungers fitted to the brake and clutch pedals (for the cruise control option) - maybe worth a look there.

Your problem appears to me to be associated with the road speed over compensating a bit. There's all sorts of sensors on fuel injected cars like Road Speed, Air Temp, Air Mass, crank position etc.

I'd bet there's a duff sensor or some damaged wiring somewhere (finding it is another matter) I've not really heard of any ECU problems apart from maybe the odd corroded multi-plug that goes into the thing.

I can't really offer anything more to be honest.
