There's 3 things that fit in the gap for the D8 MFD - a tray, a large external temperature display, and the combined stereo display/trip computer
The trip computer functionality is enabled/disabled by the use of a small rotary switch on the side of the unit. See the large trip computer thread in the electrical forum for more details

Yes, i've read that thread, but from that, I need two banks of plugs for it all to work, and i've only got one
Thus I need to get a plug and associated wiring from a car with it on, to wire into the ecu and the fuel sender - I think

Put your own wires, you don't even need a second connector. I used an old computer case's led and beeper cables (the ends that connect to the motherboard fit perfectly to the display).
My first one I just soldered a bunch of wires to the PCB on the connector, braided them, took 'em out through a hole in the back then stuck a 9-pin D-sub connector on it

Well, this morning was speaking to the previous owner, and said here, take a look at this photo, and he said yeah
I said, well the fuel computer info was up, and he said, yeah, it used to work before - now I am confused!!

My thoughts as well, as why would you turn it off - well unless it's not doing very good mpg, and you don't want to scare yourself
