HI I NEED HELP WHEN I FIRST BROUGHT MY 406 HDI 2002 PLATE A FEW WEEKS AGO IT HAD NEXT TO NO FUEL IN IT SO I TOOK IT TO PETROL STATION AND PUT £20 IN IT THE FUEL GAGE MOVEED TO ABOUT 3RD OF A TANK HAPPY DAYS AFTER A FEW MILES I PUT A BOTTEL OF RED X IN HER THE FUEL GAGE THEN JUMPED TO HALF A TANK I THOUGHT THIS WAS STRANGE AS IT WAS ONLY ABOUT 300ML BOTTLE OVERED ABOUT 100 MILES AND THE GAGE NEVER MOVED STRANGE AGAIN I THOUGHT AFTER I HAD DONE ABOUT ANOTHER 50 WITH IT OT MOVING I FILLED THE TANK UP EVEN THOUGH GAGE STILL SHOWED HALF TANK THE TANK TOOK AROUND 60 LITERS SO MUST OF BEEN EMPTY THE GAGE WENT TO FULL I THEN DID AROUND 30 MILES AND THE GAGE DROPPED DOWN TO 3/4 OF A TANK I THOUGHT I HAVE ONLY DONE 30 MILES THIS CANT BE RIGHT SO I FILLED UP AGAIN BUT COULD ONLY GET £4 OF DIESEL IN IT AND THE GAGE HAS SITTL STAYED AT 3/4 OF A TANK I KNOW THIS CANT BE A TRUE READING CA SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME

Please stop shouting.

Remote sensing of quantities such as levels in a tank have three principal components. The sensor, in this case the level doo-dad in the tank, the indicator - your dashboard fuel gauge - and all the wiring and whatnot in between.

Now, 406s are known to suffer from dodgy soldering in the dash department. My own fuel gauge required re-soldering twice, but that was as deep as the problem got. There are several topics on this subject, essentially you split the dash unit down until you can access the PCB then re-do all the joints.

Additionally, my gauge used to indicate about 1/4 of a tank less than I actually had when I started the car. It was only after a few minutes' driving that it crept up to a more realistic level. Based on this and the testimony of other users, I have concluded that the Peugeot make rubbish fuel level indicators >.<

If it's not the actual gauge, my next instinct would be to open up the tank and inspect the level sensor in there. It may be broken or gummed up or perhaps a connection has come loose. While you're in there, check the strainer on the fuel pick up. If parts are mucky, clean them with de-greaser. If they're damaged consider a replacement from the scrappy.

Oh, and not wanting to sound preachy but please try a little punctuation in your posts, it makes them ten times easier to decipher ^_^

hi thanks for you reply but when you sait it might be a problem with the dash soldering is this hard to remove and solve also do you know anywhere i can get diagrams on doing this thanks for your help

You could be in luck then, the problem is it depends if it's Bosch or Siemens injection system if you can change the level sender, the Bosch has an expensive lift pump attached to it, the Siemens doesn't. You could try cleaning up the connectors on the level sender...

Hi,

I have a similar problem where sometimes the fuel gauge under-reads by about a quarter tank. It seems to be in a good mood at the moment though :D

Low-skill solution: I just run to about 600 miles and then fill it full, as I know I can get at least 700 miles out of a tank.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

Mine drops gradually to zero, then when I'm about to fill up I've got half a tank again :roll:

What sort of diagrams? There's these on the Coupe parts catalogue, the part numbers are a bit off sometimes and it's coup-focussed so half the dagrams are missing but should give you an idea, or you could sign up for Pug's Service Box, it's a bit involved but gets you into Pug's own parts system. Btw wiring diagrams you have to pay for, I've never even seen one so I don't know if they'll help.
