Speedo's do overead the faster you go. In rear life he was probably doing 115-120mph at most. My old speedo was calibrated and was stamped to say so and would do 103mph on the speedo. My New cluster isn't calibrated and I can get it to 110mph!

Funnily mine's absolutely bang on according to GPS. My old tubby estate and v6 saloons over-read by 8% and 9.5% respectively though throughout the range
<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang

Hi Kev.

That sounds about the same marjin for error that mine has when checked with the sat nav. As a rule of thumb 8ish percent over seems normall.

I was thinking that's a bit asthmatic even for a 90. Not that you should need to do more than a ton but it could be a sign you have other issues. What mpg are you getting?

My DTurbo onl;y has 90bhp and it gets to 105mph like a bat out of hell and then just stops there as it hits the 4000rpm governor and cuts the fuel
My Uncles HDi 90 will do 107mph easy :supafrisk:

Some XUD's have a 'whopping' 92 bhp. 8)
Are you sure it's the govenor? Will it do more than 4000rpm in third, for example?
How does it know it's in 5th? :?

Theres a governor in the fuel pump. When it hits 4000rpm is gradually cuts the fuel being sent into the engine by 80% by 4700rpm or so. Which Is why if you drive it past 4000rpm in 1st to 4th you feel the car going very flat and boost dropping out the sky. It still accelerates but goes very flat. It dosen't make a difference in 1st, you can just notice it going flat in 2nd, 3rd feels like you've hit a brick wall and 4th gear goes very very laggy and 5th simply stops at just a smidge over 4000rpm.

People put shims on the governor spring which means it revs to around 7k and won't start cutting fuel till 6k.

That was a few years ago, and it would probably have gone a bit more. Up the M42 as I recall.

Averaging 65mpg at the moment -- driving considerably slower than 95.

I think there is some air getting into the fuel lines: there are bubbles in the clear tubes coming from the fuel filter housing, and the primer bulb won't go hard no matter how much it is pumped (I guess that will come to us all as we get older :( ). Anyway, its been like that for years, and I can't complain at the economy. Although it is a LOT quicker off the lights with its new air filter :)

OK, I've had a ton out of it this morning; westbound on the M4 (I was  after getting up an hour early only to spend an hour queueing to get out of Slough -- M4 was closed eastbound.) Computer gives 28mpg average over 35 miles.

Only just though, the last bit from 95 was a real struggle.

I rarely get much above 60. It was a pleasant surprise to find how willing and capable it feels at about 80 -- if you can afford the fuel.
