Citroen ZX Suspension

Post by FarmerPug »

I was wondering after driving behind a zx the other day how does the back wheels steer in tandem with the front ones, i have read that they do but it didnt look too dramatic in action, is there a connector to the back wheels steering them. I nearly bought a zx from an aunt who owned a dturbo one which was a rocket, the 306 dturbo just didnt compare except for styling but i quite liked the pointier design of the zx

They run torsion bar rear suspension, and they are not meant to steer along with the front wheels. Any rear end steering on one is not meant to be there!

I just looked it up on Citroen's Service Box 'cos I'd never heard of it - that's almost the same set-up as a Renault 4  There's still loads of them here and when they do that it means the suspension mountings have rusted away to nothing...

Either as Steve says or there is excessive movement on the trailing arm bearings. Either way, it would need fixing pretty sharpish before it swapped ends round a corner.

Some fwd designs of the 70's/80's had rear suspension geometry which altered the castor angle, (or summat like that), as the suspension compressed or extended, thus 'steering' the rear wheels a little as the car leans.

Designed to overcome the feckin useless, (sorry), advantages of fwd.

2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

They used to break rear top suspension mounting rubbers very often, a right pain, easy to replace though with the right tools.
