on my 2.2 sri d9 it is only a matter of time before my back box gives up the ghost. now due to the silly price of a new one and the price of a stainless system, and my lack of funds with a baby on the way etc, would this work:
remove the back box and extend the remaining pipe back to exit where the standard pipe goes.
will it be silly loud?
will i loose/gain performance?
am i just being a wally?

That would sound horrible and the drop in back pressure is not good for a non-turbo car.

The back box fell off my 3.0 omega, leaving just a cat in each down pipe. Granted I only drove it a mile or so to get sorted but it was LOUD. Popped & banged on the overun too. 
Only the mental image of the remaining stub ending next to the fuel tank forestalled further 'research'.

I ran my 2.1TD without a backbox for about a month while I got round to fitting the stainless. Wasn't offensively loud, but was obvious that the backbox was missing. It will no doubt be much worse on a petrol too.

when my whole exhaust was off it wasnt silly loud it was offensivley loud, pretty girls would look at the car in disgust, and bora drivers looked bewildered that a non bora could make such a terrible sound, but the performance was unaffected all i noticed was that i drove much more economically/gently just so it didnt make the noise. But thats just on a oil burner some petrols sound good without a backbox the saxo is not one of them, the alfa v6, and jeep cherokee being some that do sound good.
