Is my 406 as bad as I think?

Post by Bailes1992 »

Right I'm sure you've all heard the sob storys about my 406, how it's broke 24/7. But as I was just driving I noticed this...
Image
Then this happened...
Image
Now I'l admit I've had new clocks but these clocks are actually 200miles less than what the cars mileage is. So really the car was clocking 130200 miles.
Then it dawned on me... Look at the mileage when I took my 406 for it's MOT in March!
Image
106741 miles :|

That means between March 1st and today which is about 7 months I've done 23259 miles! and I've driven my car hard!
Is it really that unreliable? or is it just wear and tear? I do wonder :(
I'l miss this 406 when It's gone!

Oh and when I went to scan my MOT Cert I found this ...
Image
If I remember correctly the question was, how many seconds ion a year

I love Lanzarote, been 8 times, not keen on the Sun Tropical though, but I'm an old git and it doesn't suit old gits :cheesy:

Just to give you a comparison, I had my first car for 20 months and had the engine out 7 times, (1 clutch, 5 rebuilds and an engine swap). So it doesn't look like Bernard's been too hard on you. :)

Dude - that's a huge amount of miles!

I thought doing 500km a week was above average! Out of all of my mates, I seem to be doing the most amount of kays! Urban driving is very different here though - less motorways and the like!

Thats about 700 and something miles a week and an inquisitive nature  ,

I reckon Bernard has been fairly reasonable with you,
I cant remember just now, but just how many times has he completely refused to work?
I dont mean bits being broken but full on wont move?

I have had motors that have been much much worse on much lower mileage than you have been clocking up  ,

I found myself saying basically the same thing when mine went and was totally astounded that such words could come from my keyboard, i thought i had no love for the old bus but they have a way of working their way into your affections.

Bejesus if you're doing 40K a year then your car is fantastic.

Your engine etc will easily do 200K

It'd be worth fixing all your sussy bushes and whatever and enjoy the ride.

We'll at the moment I was really wanting to keep it, I even asked for a small loan off the old man so I can carry on my plans over winter and sort it out. Stuff that are essential are...

Glow plugs
Shocks
Driveshaft
Engine mounts
Window Switches
Rear Drums
Brake Calipers
etc.

But I was going to get it painted white, lower it on a bronzy/gold alloy of some sort and get some red leather for it.
Ontop of that move the turbo to above the gearbox, get a bigger intercooler, Water/Meths injection, a 2.1TD or HDi gearbox and get a good tune on it along with the Governor mod.

Unfortunatley insurance prices have gone crazy! I paied £1500 for my first insurance. I've now been driving 7 months and nobody will insure me cheaper than £3.5k on the 406 :(

That is crazy, you're far more likely to be hooning around like a lunatic in a Focus than a 406 estate.

I think Bernard's behaved quite well considering. Didn't you make a comment the other day about him being offered cheap to someone else "because he was knackered" before you bought him. Sounds like he'd already had a hard life before you got him fella :(

Since I've had Bernard this one guy on Pug306.net has always said stuff like "Shouldn't have bought a car from Birmingham" etc in jest. I asked him how he knew my car was from Birmingham. Turns out a fat bloke offered it to him cheap cause it was so nackered :( It was a fat bloke that sold it to me for £650! It's done well though :)

Insurance is a bugger, why is it so high on the 406, mines group 13 which is a joke. I could be driving a BMW 320d if i didnt care that people hated me, but even so thats a poweful rear drive car can be insured for less than my car. But even so my mechanical reliability is fine so i dont mind, and theres no car as comfortable as the exec, bar really expensive merc s classes, citroens, rollers and jaaaags but its up there among them.

I user to moan at you for complaining when litle bits broke. Now i've seen your mileage, i'm not to moan at you, i'm going to tell you to QUIT BITCHING!!!

Try putting 20k on the Focus and see if it takes it as well.

Are you sure £7500 is the best quote you can get? PM me your details if you want and i'll have a hunt.

£3.5k is the cheapest I can get it being a 17 year old in the CF31 area, with my Mum whos 48 and been driving 30 years and my Dad whos 50 and been driving 32 years. The cars kept on the drive, doing 50k a year, with Lowering mods, alloys and engine mods aswell as £500 worth of ICE and interior leather.
Can get the Focus with mods for £1.6k :(

Ahh, so you've done a quote on suspension, engine, and interior mods the car hasn't got yet? And are you expecting to do 50k next year, wouldn't 30k be more realistic? (or even less if you're stuck at work most of the time)

Seems like you're trying to price yourself out of the car (in the same way you like to replace the entire front end of the car when you need new brake pads ;))

If I was to keep the 406 I would knock it off the road over the winter and rebuild it. So mods are important. Around 40-50k a year. I've done 25k in 7 months.
