I thought I'd better introduce myself as I've just registered on the forum. As you can probably guess from my user name I'm called Eric and I'm about to become the proud owner of my first 406 I've decided to take the plunge into 406 ownership as my other car.....while real fun through out the spring and summer becomes a real liability once the winter starts to kick in and the roads become damp and icy. I've managed to find myself a nice clean 2001 Executive HDI estate in blue with 132000 on the clock I should pick it up in the next couple of days once the current owner has transferred his private plate.
This being my first Peugeot and my first diesel I'll apologise in advance for all the stupid question I'm probably going to ask over the coming months
Thanks Steve. The daft thing is that if you give me a petrol engine I'll have it stripped and rebuilt in a few hours..........but any engine that can go bang without a spark plug confuses me
You and me both, all these damn sensors to worry about and nothing really that you can put your hand on to check. Worse still these HDis have so much pressure in the fuel system that you can't undo a line to check for pressure without risking ending up in casualty or worse. I'm starting to get the hang of it but I bought my first 406 diesel here and the fist time it refused to start I opened up the bonnet, looked at it and... Where the hell do I start? Check for, erm... Then I realised one of the 3 keys I got with it didn't have the transponder for the immobiliser, phew!
Thanks Dai The other car is a 2001 Honda S2000.........just over 240bhp,rear wheel drive and no traction control. As I say....great fun in the warm and dry but throw in some cold, wet roads or a bit of ice and things get a little very quickly

You must have done something to the Honda Eric? 240bhp! I thought the 2.0 IVTEC put out 200 as standard but 220- ish as an import spec? and how dare you have more bhp than me! (I was hoping to hold a kinda top-spot on that one )

The S2000 dosn't have an IVTEC engine It has a 2.0 F20c which is the last of the proper Vtec motors before they changed to Ivtec 240 as standard and 250 import spec.......but you'll only get that 250 if you can find 100ron fuel. Mine has some breathing mods and was dynoed at 244 back in the summer I must remember not to try and rev the 406 to 9000rpm like I can do with the S2000
You've just acquired one of the finest load-lugging mile munchers reasonable money can buy.
What flavour's your HDi then, (they come in 2.0 90bhp, 2.0 110bhp & 2.2 136bhp guises, but I don't think you can get a 90bhp exec)?

Picked it up at lunch time and my first impressions are very good indeed. A very smooth drive with a lot more mid range grunt than I thought it would have....but I guess thats a diesel for you. It dosn't go round corners quite as well as my Honda but then again few cars do. More toys to play with than I'm used to....and I've no idea what most of them do yet Once I've given her a damn good clean and polish and given the leather a good seeing to (I valet cars for a living so if anyone wants any tips on how to get leather back to a nice matt factory finish let me know and I'll share my secrets) I'll post the odd photo or two.
Remap your HDI 2.2 (and I'm sure someone here will talk to you about removing the FAP for extra grunt) - you could be looking at a hefty HP and torque increase. Might even be better for your fuel economy in some cases.
Also, you'll want to put a coupe strut brace over the front suspension. Makes a hell of a difference to cornering without compromising on ride comfort.
