turbo failiure? DIY Turbo change?

Post by ct666 »

Ive got a W reg 406 hdi , i presume its the lower power one as its got no intercooler

It came back by AA a few weeks back, i was going down the motorway about 80, it started to accelerate on its own, i put the clutch down and pulled over as the car started bellowing clouds of smoke....enough to get the highways agency to close the motorway and to come to the car! , car wouldnt turn off with the key so i stalled it.

the engine had very little oil left, but still starts and runs fine , no rattles or anything , apart from thick smoke instantly on startup

The aa said turbos gone , ive never known them to be right before .... but this time i think they may be

How easy is it to change the turbo , ive done it loads of times on a petrol VX calibra but ive never done anything to the pug , it looks a pain as its on the back of the engine

Does anyone know if i would be better trying to undo the turbo from the manifold, taking manifold and turbo off in one , can i undo it from above the engine?

Are there different turbos for them or are they all the same?
