d8 heater matrix can be removed without removal of dash board , ive not done it but have the area striped down now so heres few tips .
pull the ashtray out and pull up the housing that goes from gear stick toward dashboard " it pulls up easily " , there is 1 screw holding the lower centre console right next to gear stick , the lower centre console trim that has heater vent in for footwell .
pull off the 3 stud things that hold the carpet behind the glove box that covers the blower motor , the glove box and its housing need removing , the glove gox hindges on 2 plastic pins that pull outwards 1 toward offside and one toward near side , there is a small pannel in the end of dashboard when door is open that clips out and there are 2 screws behind the trim holding glove box housing , there are 3 more screws across the top of glove box where the latch closes , there are 3 further screws that " cannot " be accessed and need a gentle yank scream and bend the F""""s off , one of them os visable in back of glove box to the right , the other 2 are on the right of glove box where it joins centre console , there spring clips cluped onto plastic that the screw goes through and they snap out easily appart from the one in rear of glovebox housing thats through a metal bracket , a few twists turns and yanks and it comes free .
where ya right foot would be in passanger footwell is a large torque bolt that is holding the upper dash to lower console that will need removing , it is on a long pointed piece of plastic that will bend out the way as this is all that is in way of heater matrix sliding out toward passanger side door .
( this bit is speculatin but will be obviouse if your attempting the job ) , under the bonnet remove the 2 hoses going to the heater matrix pipes as they dissapear through bulkhead , where your left with 2 pipe stubs you will see they protrude through a large plate with rubber gromits and a few smaller pipes , the plate is fixed to bulkhead with 3 x 10mm bolts remove the bolts to allow some play in the plate , then go back into footwell and there is a small bolt between the 2 aluminium pipes fixing them to the heater matrix undo the bolt and try move the pipes out of way , by this point the heater matrix should slide out toward passanger side door im not sure what holds it into the distribution box under the dash but its only few screws or bolts which will be obvious .
like i say ive not done it but have it all appart atm repairing wiring and blower motor .

Irember doing a heater matrix on 405 what amare!
ithink the 406s will be just the same,
ihad too loosen off the dash so it pulled forward Enough to get the heater matrix out all because of a suport bar behind the dash,
""Anyone that changes a Heater matrix needs the paitience of a saint and a box full of plasters, !!
