indicator stalk replacement

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

indicator stalk replacement

Post by benlowlew »

hi, got a 2001 1.8 406 where the curse of the indicator stalk has appeared i.e indicating when it feels like it!!! Its not the COM2000 version. Is it fairly easy to replace the stalk yourself? Thanks

yes simple enough, just be very carefull with the airbags,

you need to de-activate them before you start unscrewing stuff around the wheel

this topic might help you ...

Hold on, the guy says it's not com2000, so none of that dicking about with the airbag because I'm pretty sure you don't have to take the steering wheel off.

After reading this post i've just done my indicator stalk this afternoon. Wasn't too bad just a bit fiddly getting the torx screws out of the steering column shroud(T15). You need a set of torx bits that are quite long my ones just about did the job had to do it half a turn at a time.
Theres only two torx screws holding the indicator stalk in (T10). Indicator stalk slides out to the left takes a bit of wiggling it about to free it.
There are two electrical connectors on the back to remove (2 clips to press in to release). Just having a cup of coffee before going out to put the the plastic shroud back on. The job hasn't took long at all and now i have a car that doesn't indicate left all the time or intermittently over bumps.

I did manage to keep the car going for a while by hooking a couple of elastic bands over the indicator stalk then round the steering column then over the windscreen wiper stalk the bands just pulled enough upwards to stop the indicator dropping downwards as it was driving me round the bend having to counteract the automatic indicating. Like someone said already not a very good design but it did last 190k so thats not bad!

Thanks

Job done. Didnt take long at all. Only tricky bit was undoing the screws that hold the cowling on as my torx key was only just long enough. Part cost 41.50 off ebay.
