Diagnostics socket

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Diagnostics socket

Post by crad2 »

Have a 406 1.8l 16 v 1996 reg. There's a socket next to fuse box with 30 pin connector i think is the obd . How do i connect to it to read fault codes? it's not the standard socket i dont think.
Reason i ask is it seems to be running rich, as far as i can tell lambda sensor seems ok.
Thanks anyone.

It is a diagnostics socket, but it isn't ODB/ODB2 compliant - you need special (read: expensive) cabling and software.

The cables are known as "Lexia" interface and the software is called "Peugeot Planet 2000"; it runs on Windows XP only (or on a Windows XP virtual machine hosted on any guest OS). You can get dodgy copies of it on eBay for £££

OR

There may be a forum member near you who already has it, and for the price of one (or more) beers, may allow you the use of their kit.

Where might you be?

 Just my luck! I'm in Doncaster, Yorkshire.
Just found this: http://www.autodiag.de/lexia-3-30pin-to ... l-117.html
Would this work connected to a OBD2 code reader?
Thanks for info.

Might well do - the site does talk about PP2000 - but I have no experience with this product at all. You might be a pioneer on these here forums!

There's worse places than Doncaster, (said Doggy reminiscing about young ladies from that part of the world he met many years ago, who are probably grandmothers by now).....

Oh. sorry! The lead! - no it's just an adapter so you can connect PP2000 to earlier cars, most people with a Planet system have one, me included. not sure if a standard OBD2 reader will work - it doesn't on diesels, but you might be luckier with a petrol. You could try ringing local garages - they can't really charge you if it won't talk, (least not if you make that clear up front).

hello all,

i've been looking to run a diagnositc on my car too. i ordered the 30pin to OBD2 cable thinking it would talk to a OBD2 code reader, but it doesn't :(
been looking around for a Lexia-3 readers/kits and they are not cheap! it seems that even though the cards using this old connecter are, well... old, it's cheaper to send the damn things to a mechanic to do a read for you! is it cheaky to do that though? with the intention of fixing it yourself? or do mechanics know you're going to screew it up and come running to them again to fix your cock ups!

The diagnostic port on the 406 varies considerably from model to model.

For example, the petrol-powered cars from 2001 onwards use standard ODB2 protocol. Pre-2001 cars use Peugeot's own proprietary protocol. None of the diesels (except potentially the very last run of HDi cars around 2004) use ODB2 - they still use the proprietary protocol.

Depending on what you need to do, you may need to get hold of a Lexia-3 interface and Peugeot Planet 2000 (PP2000) software. You can pick these up from as little as £80 on eBay, but you will probably find they go for a fair bit more than that. You would need a USB/serial port-equipped laptop with a copy of Windows XP on it (or any USB/serial port-equipped laptop (even a MacBook) with a virtual PC running Windows XP on it).

Out of interest, what type/year of 406 have you got? Might want to stick that info in your signature so people can give you more specific advice.
