HORN WORKS ONLY ON ONE STEERING WHEEL SPOKE

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

HORN WORKS ONLY ON ONE STEERING WHEEL SPOKE

Post by panadero »

I have had a 406 2004 2.0 HDI 110 ESTATE for 2 years and the horn has never in that time worked as it should. There are 2 horn symbols on the steering wheel and the horn only works on one of them. I have already printed off Steve Earwig's fantastic guide on how to fit a new Comms 2000. But Steve had a very interesting discussion with "Mark" who had some queries about the wiring layout differences he encountered in his particular later model which may well apply in my case. It rather feels to me on pushing the pad that this is just a poor contact issue and I am hoping that I can get away with simply cleaning up the contacts. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions please? A response from Steve Earwig himself would be great - as a new member I do not how to address this query to him directly.

Thanks
Panadero

You rang? Hi there :cheesy: On a 2004 your wheel will be the same as mine in the pics, I think your plan of action will be to disconnect the battery for an hour (or go mad and do all the air bag ecu disconnection stuff if you're paranoid about these things like I am...), remove the pad and clean the contacts. Job jobbed.

i have stayed quiet about this one but i also have this problem i think it was the person who changed the com2000 didnt put the middle in right, or the contacts could be dirty. Anyhow how do i get the middle to pop out, i put a screwdriver into the access hole and felt the spring but then what.

ive done that but it doenst come out just the bottom unlocks. I dont want an airbag hitting me in the face, or broken cable. Is there tabs holding the top side in place.
the pre multiplex d9s screws holding the airbag in place is much better than this.

You might want to press down on the pad a bit to allow the spring clip to fully release.

The Frenchies reckon you can get to the spring from behind the wheel but I've never looked to see if they're right.

If you can feel the spring and you're not angling it towards yourself then you're not.

Many thanks to Steve Earwig for that response. Will have a go at cleaning the contacts but just to get through imminent MOT maybe I'll just ask the tester to push in the centre of the pad where it does seem
to respond better. Never had this problem with my previous 306 - these intermittent faults drive you
round the proverbial beeping bend! Thanks again to Steve.
