HPi - Loud Ticking noise at idle

Post by GTXJez »

Hi All
I am a newbie to the site having been a long term 'Omega' Driver and on a great forum for that car.
Pleased to see we have a superb 406 Forum too 8)

I decided to 'upgrade back' to a 406 after running a 2.2 TD Estate for 11 years (never should have sold it!)

I now have a 52 Plate GTX HPi (AC+SN) 94k One Owner, Full dealer History, Immaculate - Great "wanna be'' Diesel :D
Can anyone advise on the street value :?

I have minimal knowledge - so can you guys highlight the key issues with this 'lump' and other parts of the car?

Cambelt replaced by Peugeot Dealer at 89,000 so that's done - anything else I should be wary of?

Car runs superbly except for a loud ticking noise ad idle? is this normal?
You don't notice it when the revs pick up or when driving.

Loooking forward to using the site.

Hi there, welcome :cheesy:

I've no idea about the HPi but there a couple of owners on here that may be able to advise. I presume you mean a 2.1 td, I feel the same about my one but, at the end of the day, the floor was starting to fall out of it  Sometimes it's as well to get rid of these things while they're still going, yet before they turn into money pits.

Welcome along!

DaiRees, one of the admins on this site, has an HPi - I've never encountered one myself, but for living from day-to-day with an HPi, Dai is your man. I'd put the word "HPi" in the title of this thread so it can be more easily found.

Hiya Jez,

At last, another HPi owner I can talk to!

Had mine coming up to 9 years and I think there's only ever been a handful of others on the forum. The guys in my local Peugeot and Citroen Specialists have never seen another HPi engine, not even in a C5 and I'm told they were much more common than the 406.

Anyway, to get to your query, people used to talk about them sounding like a tractor on tickover when I first had mine, but at the time it was new and just didn't! As it's got a bit older and a few more miles on the clock it is now starting to sound a little diesel-esque on tickover. My theory is that it's something to do with the injectors wearing, but that's as far as it goes! Don't worry about it, from the very limited experience we have it's perfectly normal.

Mines a Jan 2002 Exec estate, done 76K, had the cambelt for it's 8th birthday present, EGR valve, one sensor and..... that's it really! Regular 33 mpg combined even living in hilly Wales, I do drive very gently these days though with the price of fuel but it was never less than 28 even driving like a loon! 40 on a run is easily achievable. It did suffer a misfire for a while which caused plenty of heartache (mostly because there was no-one who new anything about them to advise, and the dealers just wanted to randomly change expensive parts, so I told them to bugger off!! ) but that turned out to be the plug gaps, book says 1.0mm but they tend to open up over time and cause the misfire so I set them to 0.9 and then they'll last to the next service.

What else? errrm, I dunno, it's just a brilliant car! Smooth, quiet, comfortable, plenty of toys. I'm actually tentatively looking for a new car but the pug is worth far more to me than I'd ever get for it and I just can't justify spending loads of money on a car that I know I won't like as much! My business partner's driving around in a brand new BMW coupe, then I roll up in a 9 year old pug. Sometimes I wonder about image and stuff but hey, sod 'em! There's the masses who look down their noses at the old French car and then the enlightened few like us who know better  :cheesy:

Welcome to the forum, enjoy it!
Cheers
Dai

Dai, when it snows, you'll be the only one of the two of you to roll up. Beemers are sh*t in the snow 8)

Couldn't believe how many of them I passed by during the snows in January, trying to get up a gentle hill, and them getting nowhere because their rear wheels are just spinning.

Good point! I live 15 miles north and about 600ft higher than the office, he lives 3 miles south of the office at the same altitude. Which one of us gets there in the snow??

Hi Jez
re the ticking at idle..
Maybe its the crankshaft pulley?? doing the ticking at idle... it a common fault with the hdi but im guessing the hpi also has one?
i just replaced mine again, it was ticking but looked fine this time, whereas before the bottom pulley had brown like rust stains on it which is a sure sign it need replacing.

Strange

I did 56 miles yesterday from cold, mainly motorway driving and slow at times on the M25 Car Park!
Wasn't ticking when I started from cold AND wasn't when I arrived at work?

Then I did about 120 of stop start driving and the ticking returned, although it had got quieter on the run home of about 50 miles?
Started just now from cold - gone?

ANY IDEAS :?

very True....

The car is going perfect, 38-mpg which is amazing for a 2.0 litre - quick and otherwise reliable. 8)

No oil leaks anywhere on the engine - bone dry - or water usage (as yet) but with a 1,200 mile trip to Scotland starting Wednesday, I was getting a bit twitchy! :
Sure the Blue Beauty will be fine.

Thanks for all the advise and support guys - great site....
