New diesel fuel filter

Post by panadero »

To renew my filter I leave the housing bolted to the engine to facilitate movement of the lid with a metal strap type
tool. Then I remove the housing altogether and empty out the diesel. Clean inside the chamber and
refill with clean diesel before inserting new filter. With my 306 there was a rubber hand pump to get
the diesel flowing through - a few turns on the starter and all was well. The 406 does not have a
hand pump (or I cannot see it). So I fill up chamber with fresh diesel to ensure smooth start up. Seems to
work anyway. I suppose I could have emptied the chamber via the bleed screw/tube at the bottom of
the chamber but I figured that might leave some dirt in the chamber. Also I discard the old diesel in the chamber
in case it is contaminated (eg with water). I only do this every couple of years but each time I seem
to forget what to do! Any comments?
