Clutch, going rate?

Hi, my clutch, though not yet dead, is somewhat the worse for wear and i'm expecting it and my gear box to detach company oin the next few months

so just trying to plan the family finances, what's the going rate for a new clutch & fitting on an 97 1.9 diesel 406 estate?

my best price so far is £290

£290 is V good if it's a branded clutch kit and fitted well.

It's a LOT of work, with that centre bearing, having to lift engine out (or drop subframe, even worse)

it IS easy DIY, if you're prepared to remove the engine, but also time consuming, and on that basis your quote is good.

On mine at least, you DO need to drop the engine, as much as about 8" on the flywheel end to get the gearbox out of the car (subframe removed). There is simply no room to move the gearbox around more than about an inch in the engine bay, and you would need about 4" of movement to be able to slip the gearbox driveshaft out of the clutch. You'd also need very small hands to get the release bearing changed in that space too

on a 1.9 the engine does not need to be removed. i watched the guy do my 1.9. it was a bugger to get the box out from underneith tho.

price i got was £280. but i got a guy to do it who i have known for a long time, he charged me £180 BUT and its a BIG BUT

6 months later car got a slight judder and still has it ever so slightly tho . (changing my bottom engine mount fixed it a little but didnt fully get rid of the judder

so its definately the clutch. next time i pay for a clutch i will be getting a proper clutch garage to do it and i will be supplying the clutch and i will watch them put it in.

your best option would be do that yourself so you know a good clutch is going in. because with buiseness's as bad as they are at the moment i wouldnt put it past some garages putting a re-con clutch in and charging you full wack price

PS take my advice while you still can. supply your own clutch and watch them fit it you will regret not doing if you have a problem like me 6 months later

There is a company near me (West Midlands) who are good independent Peugeot Specialists who will change a clutch on a 2.0 HDi for £250…..using quality parts. They would also change the DMF and clutch for £450.
