Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

2002 406 Cigarette Lighter Dead

Post by quemlar »

Hi Gang,

I installed a bluetooth radio. All going well but I had a slight hick up installing it and caused a short and blew fuses. Everything is working fine apart from the cigar lighter. I need this to power the iPhone. I have checked the fuses under the steering wheel and the bonnet, I can't see any blown by a quick visual inspection.

Does the lighter have another fuse somewhere or will I have to remove the fuses one by one under the sterling wheel and give them a closer look, bloody awkward to get at. Usually I know a blown fuse without having to take each one out. The wiring where the radio is was non standard, the colors were wrong would you believe hence a fuse blew but I don't believe the cigar lighter routes that way, it wouldn't make sense. All I used for the radio was ground, ignition toggled 12V and, permanent 12V. According to my guide its a 40 amp fuse. Unless the diagram is wrong, the 40amp fuse under the steering wheel is fine, I tested it with a meter.

I must be missing something very basic here, embarrasing given that I repair computers for a living

Also as I'm on the subject, the lighter used be on always, I want to change it to be toggled by the ignition so whats the best way to remove it and check the wiring.

Thanks guys,

Chris

Well you guys are going to have a laugh, after studying the circuit in the Haynes manual and physically checking all connections and doing multiple continuity checks back to the fusebox the darn fuse was missing. I had taken it out when a similar one blew to show the guy in the motor factors and had completely forgotten. Of course I never put it back in! Go on have a chuckle on me. There are some fuses not used so I didn't miss it last night. At least I'm nearly an expert on the cig lighter socket circuit now.

All electrical circuits now operating 100% and time to give the new Bluetooth JVC a test today!

Splendid :cheesy: Btw you might have noticed the fuse has 2 positions (three slots, see?) so you can either have it turn off with the ignition or on all the time, which was the second part of your question (if you didn't spot that one too  )

Hi,

My cigarette lighter is also dead!

However, I am NOT mechanically minded, do not have the car's handbook & would just like to get it fixed whilst hubby is serving overseas, so I can use my Sat Nav & get home to Germany!

Can anybody give me a clue where to
a) Find the fuse box &
b) Which fuse it is which will need to be replaced please?

Have been to Halford's to buy fuses, but now at "scratching head" stage!

(Have tested all chargers, replaced fuse in one of them so figured it must be socket...)

Please help ASAP, as having now bought a new Sat Nav, I need to be able to use it!!!

Hello Snorpet,

According to my trusty detailed Haynes manual, March 1999 to 2002.

1) The fusebox is located behind the drivers side lower fascia panel running between the centre console to the right hand side of the car.

2) Twist the fasteners 90 degrees and carefully remove the panel.

3) check fuse number 23 which is a 20amp fuse.

4) replace fuse if broken/blown.

5) Stop scratching head.

If your car was manufactured after 2002, i cant comment for what Peugeot may have changed regarding you Peugeot, i am only quoting from a Haynes Peugeot 406 Manual based on vehicles built between March 1999 to 2002.

Good Luck Garry
