draining tank with lift pump

Post by frosty11 »

1999 406 HDI (90) Diesel
Hi there , brand new to this forum and i already need help

Put £2.50 of petrol in my 406 diesel , only had a couple of gallons of diesel in it at the time, so a ratio of around 4 to 1 i suppose.
I did not start the car (got towed home) but did switch the ignition on a few times so maybe some has pumped some into the pipes.
I want to pump out the petrol diesel mix with the lift pump in the tank (think this is ok) by disconnecting the pipe at the filter..
Does anyone know how to keep the lift pump running because of course it switches itself off after some seconds once the ignition is on..
I do not really want to keep switching the ignition on and off ..Thanks

£2.50 worth or petrol will be fine in a full tank of deisel.

take ya car back to fuel station and fill it to top with diesel

if you look in most diesel car handbooks it says adding a %age of petrol is fine. in winter months diesel wax's , petrol in the tank hels to stop this. so £2.50 worth of petrol wont do any harm what so ever

connecting a direct 12v supply to liftpump should keep it going but you do not need to do this. (see post above)

I agree, whack some more diesel in to reduce the concentration
The veg boys run a percentage petrol during the colder months so can't do any harm

I've heard significant amounts of petrol can knacker the lift pump - get loads of diesel in asap.

Definately, it will strip out all lubrication from the lift pump and screw it up

Thanks all for the information...i have read from many other posts + a diesel specialist that the HDI common rail fuel system is a completely different animal
to the older peugeot diesel engine..Thay say that while a few litres of petrol in an older engine will do no harm , the same in a common rail can cause serious problems later..HP pump and injectors for example..It could be that they exaggerate this but to be sure i have added 5ltrs diesel drained (with lift pump) again added 5lts drained again..I have done this many times and though i think i do not get all the diesel mix out of the tank , i now believe i have around 160 to 1 mix and think i will go on that until i can add some more diesel at the petrol station..
P.S i am going to put in a new lift pump early next week as i understand this can never be a bad idea on a 406..
one more question does anyone know if its only the lift pump that showers the fuel system with metal filings and debris when it fails..or does the HP do the same

Thanks all again for the help

you are over reacting buddy, top it it with doozil and let it run, well that would have been my advice but you have already emptied the tank so on you go.

Welcome by the way :cheesy:
