please help with 2002 peugeot 406 2.0 hdi (90)

Post by pete01 »

Hey all, just bought a 2002 peugeot 406 2.0 hdi (90) abt 2 weeks ago, it had a full years mot with it, I booked it in for psv because I am going to taxi in it, I noticed an annoying rattle in the rear of it but it passed no problem, I took it to my mechanic before and after the psv to try to find what this noise is but he cant find anything and said everything is solid.
I have checked in the boot to see if anything is moving about like the spare wheel or the jack etc but it all seems fine, it has the foam inset for the jack etc to set in place in the wheel so wouldnt make any noise.
This noise is like thumping against something when im driving over rough parts of roads and is driving me nuts trying to find where it is coming from, has anyone ever experienced this and found out what it was, any information would be greatly appreciated thanks.
I also have another problem lol, in the morning when i start the car it begins to struggle a bit as if its not getting enough fuel and if I rev it when it returns to idle it cuts out, if i leave it for five mins to heat up without touching the throttle its ok and drives fine but if I try to take of when I start it from cold when i change gear from first to second it will stall, we have changed the oil an filter also the air filter along with the fuel filter and put a fuel line cleaner into it but its still the same, the car has 190000 miles on it so must be something worn out, i also had it checked with a diagnostic machine but it showed up 2 unknown faults!!
I will be so thankful for any help with these matters, thanks for taking the time to read this. :D

Welcome :cheesy:

Common things to start with would be exhaust mounts, rear drop links and rear horizontal links bars. I would put a jack under the suspension arm to take the load off before checking for any play. Failing that, try checking lower rose joint bushes. Jack the car up and see if you can move the wheel side to side or up and down, much as you would to check the wheel bearing.

As for the other thing, I don't know much about these complicated HDI things :P

I cant remember who posted it on here, but you can check if the rear top links are knackered by leaving the car on the ground and grabbing the top of the tyre and pulling it out towards you and pushing it back towards the car, in other words shaking or rocking the top of the wheel, if there is a problem with the top stabilizers you should hear the knocking that way if jacking it up doesn't give you any clues, do that for both rear wheels and see if there is any noise, its how i confirmed mine needed replacing.
