406 Heater motor

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

406 Heater motor

Post by raccoon »

Hi everyone. Winter is on its way, so I am trying to get the car ready. My first problem is the heater motor not running. The car is a 1999/2000 406 hdi lx deisel. It has just gone off this last week but never showed any signs of giving up. I have checked the control pack thingy under the centre consol and that is recieving and kicking out the voltage.
I checked the end conectors where the cable goes into the motor and power is there also and does stop when the ignition is turned off. The motor does not run at all and when I press the switch for the blower to go onto the screen nothing happens.
I am guessing that the motor is kaput. It does spin freely when pushed round by hand but I have not put any other power to it as sugested in another post. Is it an easy thing to change the motor or do I need special tools. I can see the motor under the glove box as there is no carpet in the way. I would be gratefull for any advice and will have a pint for anyone who can help. Thanks everyone.

Just to let you know that I have my heater motor working again. Its nothing I have done, it just started to work again. I am guessing now that it must be a earth fault because at the same time as that was not working my rear heated screen was off and thats back on. I have read on one of the posts that the cables under the passenger front sometimes gets a bad earth, is this correct.

Just a short update. As I said in my last post the heater started to work. Well it went off again. I have now traced the fault back to the ignition switch. If I jiggle the switch the heater starts again. So I guess it is either the switch thats worn or the cable socket at the back of the switch is not tight. I dont seem to have a socket small enough to fit into the screw holes to remove the cowling so will just leave for time being. At least I can get the motor running.
