What causes the front to pull to the left when...

Post by Stu63 »

You take your foot off the accelerator, then kind of straightens up when back on it (cant post a mot history check as the sites down  )

it's an 02 406 hdi est with 130k, has had alot work done recently on brakes, b/joints ect inc a new wishbone ect just a few days ago, tyres also seem good, it brakes straight too....I'm stumpted

Well unless it's an engine or g/box mount, duff steering rack....or twisted chassis

Check your tyre pressures first - a soft one on one side can do this.
2002 HDi 2.2 Exec Estate, (2008-12) (wonderful)
2003 HDi 2.2 6-speed Exec Estate (2012-19) (also a gem)
2009 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi VTR+ Estate (godawful heap)
2008 BMW E91 330i touring (great fun - murdered by a reversing SUV)
2007 BMW E91 325i touring (slower smoother quieter)

Hi mate,
try changing the wheel, Tyre preasures etc, as above already mentioned
also if parts have recently been Replaced have the tracking checked,

(front tyres need 33psi iirc,. )

Sorry meant to say when mentioned the tyres, I had a quick look (couldnt check the pressures) but all 4 looked fine, nothing even slightly flat ect

Managed to do a history check....apart from fails/advisories for all thats been mentioned, there was also one for the steering rack, but nothing to say if it'd be fixed/renewed

Weirdness - you'd think if it was play anywhere in the steering or suspension then braking would have the same effect. Looks like you need to buy a tyre pressure gauge (don't tell me you trust he ones on the airlines on garage forecourts!). How about swapping the front wheels from side to side? I guess you'll be telling me next that they're directional but I doubt it would matter for a couple of miles and it would eliminate them as a possible cause.

Steve the front feels dangerous, we've all felt loose or worn bearings, rubbers ect ect, but ive never felt anything like this. I honestly dont see how changing tyres can/will help this

Changing the wheels isn't to cure it, it's for diagnosis - if it changes or it now pulls to the right you'll know it's a tyre (ever felt a failed belt?)

I can't see how play in a rod end or balljoint would show up on overrun but not be exaggerated under braking. I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just I don't know how.

Did you do all the work yourself?

No, it's a car I was thinking about buying, the work was done in a garage and receipts to prove, the wishbone was done just a last week

Just one wishbone? Has it been tracked properly since the work was done?

Yes it's been done, seemingly it was only one that was needed, I'd done the pair like doing discs/pads unless I was sure the other was fine, but maybe they were told that too, I've never felt anything like this before, I'm beggining to wonder if it's best left and keep looking

Ahh, all is clear now. Yes, run away screaming waiving your arms in the air! It might be something simple or it might be a banana - best left alone.

Common as muck these 406's. If your instinct tells you something is up with this one, just walk away, there will be another one along shortly
