I have manually controlled aircon, and I've noticed with the fan setting on the lowest they are still on but at a very low speed (with aircon on or off). Is this normal? In every other car I've noticed I've been able to turn them off completely. I did notice when I opened up the controls to replace the bulbs that the control inside would turn anti-clockwise even further, but the external knob doesn't let me do this (it appears to go to the minimum marker though).
Also is it normal for the fans to not work unless the engine is running? I liked the ability to turn on the blower with the ignition on/engine off in my previous car to stop the windscreen fogging up when waiting for someone, etc.

And your 406 is a...
The power consumption on the fan is quite high so if you could run it without the engine going you'd soon run up against power saving mode anyway.
I've not had one with manual air con so I don't know if it's normal, however it doesn't sound right. Just a though: are you sure it's the fan spinning? What with the engine running an' all.ZilogJones wrote:I just bought a 2002 Rapier HDi saloon

I think I can hear it, but more noticeably I can feel the air through the vents when stationary (and it's not the wind either
)
With climate control does it allow you to turn it off completely?

Well yes, at least I can't hear it running. I would have thought yours would too
I'll go have a squint at the wiring diagrams, although I'm fairly sure all it'll show me is a box with wires coming out of it

And the diagram shows.....a box with wires coming out of it. Or if separate (what?) a smaller box with wires coming out of it (looks like if the fan controller isn't part of the main air con controller it'll be down at the bottom of the heater unit).
I think we need someone else with a manual air con car to compare.
