hi newbie 406 owner. just picked up a 406 hdi 110 glx estate and need a good mechanic in worthing or bournemouth area.
Car history.
1st car was peugeot 306 xtdt in white. pound for pound still one of the best cars i've ever had. since then had.....
vw transoporter-slow but did the job
subaru legacy -fast 4wd turbocharged fun in nz
toyota landcruiser(troopie)- essential for living/travelling in the outback. phenominal off road tool.
ford explorer-slow and juicy but luxury and essential to fit in in the usa!
its a 406 hdi 110 glx estate 92000 fsh 1 owner seems pretty straight but needs cambelt and major service due.
Need a good pug garage in the worthing or bournemouth area. not so much for the cambelt but for the 2nd problem whichis diesle smell in the cab when stationary with the ac on. Its only a whiff but it is there. goes when moving. checked the boot seals / door seals and the manifold and the turbo pipes. looks to be coming from injector(maybe) but need some specialist help. any garage reccomendations please and cost of cambelt? I did the 306 cambelt myself and it was ok but cant really be arsed to go through it all again!
thanks for your help.
tommy

Also got a 306 1.9td-gearbox has gone. PCR are close by so getting a box is no probs but what would labour costs be?

labour on a gearbox fit will be around £150-£200 i would say depending on garage

The smell would be coming from the torn exhaust flexi hose going down from the engine. At a guess, your bottom mount is gone which makes the engine shake more than normal thus shredding the flexi hose.
Trouble is you can't replace the flexi hose on its own unless you're handy with a welder as it's in one piece with the catalytic converter. So you need to replace both even if there's nothing wrong with the cat... Cheaper non "type approved" are around £90 off eBay, while "type approved" ones (for 2002 > cars) are around £140. Can be changed by yourself easily enough.
Oh and before you do that, make sure you change the bottom mount first (at a garage!!!) else it will shred the new flexi in a matter of months.
