My wifes hdi engine has started to make a squealing/scraping noise like a bearing on the way out but its hard to pinpoint - it only happens once the car has started up and driven about 3 miles so when the engine is warm then about every 15 seconds it will make this squeal noize for about 5 seconds - i thought it might be the auxillary belt tensioner pully but the sound seems to me more at the top of the engine in the cam cover - could it be a noisy cambelt bearing? i see from the records the belt and bearings were changed about 20k ago and when we boughttt he car last year the dealer popped a new belt on to be sure - it does not sound like other bearings that ahve gone on our other 306 before either?
also any tips on how to pop off the auxillay belt as space loks tight - the haynees suggests removing the exu and box and jacking up and removing the wheel and inner cover - i was wandering if it was necessary as my first idea is to take off the auxillary belt and see chek the tensioner belt bearing just in case as i know engine noises can travel about and give the wrong impression of where the problem is
cheers

Only one way to find out ,
Take Aux belt off,
and start the car up, dont run it long with the belt off tho, (battery L go flat,)
Squeal gone,
then check each pulley feel for any play,Roughness,
Pulleys fine,
then check the Freewheeling clutch on the Air compressor,
Noise still there with aux belt off,
Cambelt tensioner/ pulley or bearing in water pump,
to release tension on the aux/belt tensioner,
Move Ecu out the way, no need to disconect it,
there is a bolt on it, carnt rember what size spanner, take off the tension with spanner
and lock tensioner in position with a something small /thin drill bit /nail etc,
if you need more info pictures on the tensioners give us a shout and il put some up,

If you want too cut corners,
Start car up and Squirt some Fairy liquid on the Aux belt,
Squeal gone, New Aux belt time

Re: 406 110 hdi engine squeal
I took off the aux belt and the noise was still there with the engine running so i used a snap-on stethoscope bought a few years ago and the noise is definatly behind the cam cover so its going to my local garage for a cambelt, pully, and water pump change probobly as i expect one of them is worn - the dealer who sold me the car last year(not my trusty local garage) said he would do the cambelt but i expect/suspect he did a minimal job going by the other repairs on the car like the bodged welded exhaust i had to replace a few months back

Re: 406 110 hdi engine squeal
took it to the garage and the water pump was really shot so pump all belts, pully etc now done and its fine cheers
Re: 406 110 hdi engine squeal
That's brilliant news - the belt change was well worth the money considering the cost of what would have happened if you'd left it!selectcase wrote:took it to the garage and the water pump was really shot so pump all belts, pully etc now done and its fine cheers

<steve_earwig> I think this forum is more about keeping our cars going with minimal outlay than giving our cars more reason to go bang
