Think i'm going to be a golf tdi owner-sad to go!

Post by martint »

Well, I've had enough of French cars to last a lifetime. Ive just seen my next car hopefully-53 plate tdi golf (110)(73k).
Stunningly nice car & quite low mileage so think im gonna buy it,even though its not cheap!
The engines in 406's are decent enough but the rest BAH. Fed up with pug makin a fortune with shitty plastic parts,& underfloor wiring etc. Just cant be arsed anymore, always paying out. Ive spent over a grand on this car,& cant be arsed with all the headaches they cause.
One thing though- this forum is one o the best!(Steve,gary406,etc,have always been great). Think I'll still come on the forum from time to time as its a good crack. Ah well, its been .......fun?

When I left the Pug scene last after 'Bernard' I was just like you. Was sick of them having niggly issues, sick of spending money... After about a month of my Focus I wanted another 406!
It's called the Pug Bug... you may not think you have it, you may be conviced you don't have it, but just you wait ;)

Every different car always has its own, umm, individuality  Take this daft Toyota I'm driving about in, as far as I'm concerned my 406 is a far superior car (apart from handbrake, headlamps & ground clearance) and it has all the build quality of a children's toy but people love 'em and it's worth about twice as much as my 406, which is very annoying. I've previously owned a Nissan Navara and I rate that as the worst car I've ever owned (ok I've owned cars like a Morris Marina but cars were generally crap back then so you wouldn't expect anything more of them), so it would be a cold day in hell before I ever buy anything else Japanese.

I've not had much German to be honest, I had a mk 2 Scirocco which I loved and a Polo which I destroyed, and my dad had a 1989 300TE 4x4 Merc which was the most beautifully put together car I've ever worked on, however the "bloke down the pub" reputation really puts me off owning anything else German. They may be good but they're not invincible...

These days I seem to be playing "better the devil you know" with the Pugs, they're not brilliant but I've got no idea what I'd replace mine with that wouldn't bankrupt me.

You're welcome to come here any time, ok it says "owner's club" but just because people don't have one it doesn't mean you can't hang out with us :cheesy: Hopefully the Glof will be a good car for you, feel free to tell us how you get on with it

Know what you guys mean. There IS something about 406's. I like the sound of the diesel-it says "im maybe not sleek, but I'm a mans' car". Reliable sounding engine.
Mind you,the guy thats sellin the golf, might not wanna go ahead wi the deal,in which case,I'll be around a little while longer. If it didnt go ahead,i quite fancy the tdi octavia ambiente110. Old man got 1 other day & the torque is un-be-lieveable! same goes wi mpg=57 around town! Nice lookin motor (like the passat).
Suppose if i saw a 54plate 110 406,well,mmmmm. Got me thinkin now. Haha
I cant think of any occasion on 406oc where there's been annoyin spammin idiots etc. Frankly,im amazed theres not MORE owners on here cos the help is great, when its needed most.
Much more o this & I'll be sobbin into my cuppa!
I have an idea what i wanna do: i wanna get a super reliable german car, that holds its value really well, and drives really well.when i have my new car,im gonna keep eyes open for a 110 pug for a project to work on. Ive always wanted to rebuild an engine so i know its A1,when its put back in the car, then do the body up etc

My 406 sounds like a bag of spanners when it's cold. When its nice and hot it's the smoothest/quietest diesel engines I've heard! Just slow
Thats after 120k aswell. Was thinking about getting a local diesel specialist maybe to refurb the injectors and clean out the inlet manifold and service the EGR.
Think that would release a few extra ponies and smothen it up a little more.

But your right, the 406 diesel engines (Both my XUD and my HDi) all sound solid and reliable. I do miss the 'mechanicalness' of the XUD but my HDi is a great engine!

Doggy its just the timing between things goin wrong etc,inj pump, starter, clutch, sensors galore etc.
The pug has been a comfy drive. But they depreciate faster than a fat man sittin down.If i saw a nice 110 or even a good 406(110) wi a decent engine,id maybe take it as a project.
