Engine temperature
Hi
I have a Peugeot 406, D8 from 1998. Due to major engine problems I had a new used engine installed by Peugeot. All cooling water hoses etc was also exchanged. I think the engine temperature is somewhat high now, during highway around 90 dec C, in heavy traffic 95-99. The fans are okay, running low speed when aircon is on. Starts at high speed when engine is stopped. I am in Thailand and outside temp. is approx 33 deg c.
The old engine temperature was mostly around 80 dec c. Please help.

Re: Engine temperature
Sounds ok to me mate but if you're worried jack up the drivers side so the coolant reservoir is the highest point on the system (parking half on the kerb will do at a push). Once you've done that crack the bleed valves to see if any air bubbles escape.
MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS COLD FIRST!!!!!!
The engine temp on the old engine could have been due to a dodgy thermostat, 90 plus is pretty common on a hot day in traffic.
Just realised where you live and I said drivers side, not sure if you drive a lefty or a righty, coolant reservoir on the left as you're looking at the car, on the right from inside the car.

Re: Engine temperature
When I had my thermostat replaced I was offered either an 80C or 90C type. It could be that your old car had the 80, and your new car has the 90?

Re: Engine temperature
It is a right hand drive car. Thanks for the replies, I wil try to jack it up and bleed it.
Re: Engine temperature
Does anyone know at what temperature the cooling fans shold hit the high speed.
Re: Engine temperature
hi,i used to work for pug and the normal running temp does look high but its fine they all sit high, but you can get after market stats that have a lower opening temp,i wouldnt worry about it if the fans are cutting in ok and it runs well mate.

Re: Engine temperature
I was worried if the thermostat is not fully open and preventing the full amount of water through the cooler. ?
Re: Engine temperature
I lifted the car in the drivers side, but no air came out. After lowering the car I started it and after maybe one minute it
became warm in the top of the cooler. That to me indicates that the thermostat is hanging in open position. Before I go
to Peugeot please confirm that this is correct.
Yesterday I was driving on the country road and the temperature was only 75 deg C at 100 km/h. In the city temperature goes up to 100.
Temperature seems more unstable than normally.

Re: Engine temperature
That does sound very similar to the problem I had. In my case it was down to no thermostat being fitted!
Had one fitted and now the car sits at 80C no matter what, briefly rises to 90C in some situations but is quickly brought back down again.

Re: Engine temperature
Took my 4 year old to west mids safari park today which is the first proper run my new car has had.
Didn't go above 75 degrees all the way there at a steady 60 on the a roads, quick loo stop when we got there and then straight into the safari. Temp rose steadily up to 90 crawling round in first, occasionally touching 95ish when the fans kicked in for a minute or so.
On the hour long trip the fans kicked in 3 times for no more than 60 seconds at a time.
I'd guess that was pretty spot on for temps and thermostats so I'm very pleased with that, hope that gives an indication of how the cooling should perform.

Re: Engine temperature
I replaced the thermostat and plan to blow the radiator clean with air.
Thanks for all your help.

Re: Engine temperature
Karl, I've having the same symptom on my 406 (2.0 16v) and I found out that the previous owner had the thermostat removed.Karl wrote: Yesterday I was driving on the country road and the temperature was only 75 deg C at 100 km/h. In the city temperature goes up to 100.

So, is your engine temperature problem resolved after replacing the thermostat?
By the way, I'm in Malaysia.
jonsowman, which thermostat did you get? 80 or 90? I guess i need to get one fitted on my car.jonsowman wrote: That does sound very similar to the problem I had. In my case it was down to no thermostat being fitted!

Re: Engine temperature
Hi Dany
Sorry for the late answer. I replaced the thermostate. It did not solve the problem fully. I then cleaned the radiator outer side with the garden hose at
full power. That helped and brought the temperature down below 90 degrees.
