1.8 16v cambelt tensioner

Are the manual and automatic adjusters interchangeable. I have a 1998 R reg and have bought a kit from GSF.They have two listed and they have given me the automatic tensioner variety.However the Haynes manual says these weren't used til 1999?They did input my reg number when searching for the part number.Have they given me the right one? :?:

Hi mate and welcome to the forum,.

id say you wouid be best to fit the same as whats on the car,
iwouidnt change it to auto if its fitted with the manual tensioner imho,

Thanks Lozz, I don't know what's on it at the mo as haven't started job yet.Don't really want to have to be running around for correct part half way through! Thought maybe the manual ones had been superceded by Spring loaded ones.

According to my timing belt book the auto tensioner is fitted 1999 as Haynes are saying.

Your 98 model shows a manual tensioner in my book.

Thanks for your reply, I still don't know whether the newer auto tensioner will fit n the place of the manual type though.. :(

Ask someone on here if they couid run your Vin number through SERVICE BOX,
Perhaps that wouid give you the correct part number of the Tensioner thats fitted,/ (Needed or confirm you have the correct one to replace it with)

iwouidnt like to place a Guess wether a Auto tensioner wouid go in place of A Manual or vice versa,
its a Vital part, that if failed wouid wipe a engine out, not worth the Gamble, imho,

The belt setup is similar on the 1999 to the 1998 but it isn't the same.

As lozz said, you need the correct items, don't try to fit the later one if you should be fitting the early one.

If you can get the top cover off you should be able to see the tensioner on the left side....the manual one has a square hole in it so that you can fit a square socket (8mm) same as gearbox drain plug or the square part of a household door handle fitting filed down to fit and turn the socket/bar to tension the belt.

The auto tensioner has an allen key fitting on a metal plate so that you turn the allen screw and the plate to line up a pointer.

Try to take off the top cover so that you can ID which tensioner you need.
