RDS stopped working

I have an 02 Exec with 6 disc, sat-nav etc and recently the RDS has stopped working. My wife was driving, said the radio turned off. When she turned back on all the stations in memory had gone and the RDS does not function.

For reference the nav has always come up with an error message that the disc cannot be read (tried another known good disc and it is my nav system at fault). All other menus and functions appear to work properly.

If anyone can shed any light, that would be appreciated. Would really like to get RDS and TA back.

is the aerial working ok with the radio station ? i think ususally if its a bad signal you dont get RDS

The reception does seem worse, but can still pick most things up - perhaps receiving a weaker signal is better description.

Does a 2002 Estate (aerial at rear) have some sort of powered signal booster or likely area to check for a bad connection?

It is the uprated JBL amplified system btw (not sure if you get any other type in the exec or not).
