Immobiliser light on & won't start (2001 2.0 HDI Estate)

Help!
Being keen on preventative maintenance, I renewed the battery on my 2001 HDI estate.
I checked first about any radio code but the Haynes manual said there isn't one to put in.
Now the immobiliser light is on and although the starter works ok the engine won't start.
Also key fob dosen't respond.
I have now seen on the web that there's a procedure for disconnecting/reconnecting the battery,
but there is no reference to this in the Haynes book or the car's own handbook.
I phoned the main dealer who's only advice was to book it in (err.. car won't start).
I'm an AA member but without Homestart, and I've read that it's a lot of money to add this on!
I have the key code card but there's no provision to enter this.
Car was absolutely fine before this!

I had found this yesterday and followed the procedure but still no joy.
Will it help if it's left for a number of hours or a day, with the battery connected or disconnected?

Nothing to lose trying. My r/c lost 'synch' when I took the battery off my previous 2002 car and could only recover it by using PP2000, (dealer diagnostic clone) to 're-learn' the key codes. In order to be able to do this, you need the 4-character PIN code which is on the card you should have got with the car.

It may help to add your location - someone nearby possibly could help.

The immobiliser problem is more puzzling, as I thought this relied on the chip in the key and I didn't think the BSI had to be matched to this, but maybe I'm wrong. The engine ecu & BSI have to be 'paired' to work, perhaps the BSI has lost this info.........

Hi, wish I'd kept to my plan of keeping continuity by using (carefully)
2 sets of jump leads when fitting the new battery, as the old one wasn't flat.
I was only concerned with the radio code, but the Haynes manual said it
would register automatically I thought I was ok. Live and never stop learning!
I'm in SE London if anyone's got the gismo to reset this over the weekend? (I have the key card).

The Haynes manual wasn't lying - you don't need a code for the radio on a facelifted (D9) car (1999 V-Reg onwards). These are coded to the BSI using the car's VIN as authentication. If the code the radio has been programmed with doesn't match the code stored on the BSI, then the radio will still work, but it'll also repeatedly beep in an annoying fashion.

What has happened to you seems to be a bit on the weird side. I'm not sure what to do to fix this, but at least when this is sorted out your radio should work and you won't have to pay Peugeot a fortune for a new radio code (as owners of pre-1999 406s had to do). Small comfort, I know. Hope someone with more knowledge than me comes along and tells you what's wrong and how to fix it.

Hi, radio works ok but screen states that the anti theft system is defective.
So I must have caused this problem by not being aware of the procedure for disconnecting the battery
and reconnecting it.
What is annoying is that this is not mentioned in the vehicle handbook or the Haynes manual!

I don't think you did anything wrong. There's just a problem that you weren't previously aware of.

Leave the battery leads off overnight or for a few hours,

iirc there was a way of Re-setting a bsi by shunt, but icarnt find the link on the web,

Hi, well I'll have one more go.
Will try leaving the battery disconnected for 24 hrs then follow the correct reconnection procedure.
I have found a mobile tech who carries all the Planet gear. He says he can do it for £60 (which is what I would have to pay just to get it taken to the dealers).
I guess this is going to be the only way forward.

The nearest to me are Gravesend or Chessington, but both over 20 miles away as I am in London SE13.

Still displaying "Anti-theft system defective" and no key fob central locking.
Well today the tech guy arrived on time and sorted it in about 15 minutes.
Didn't need to even lift the bonnet. All done with laptop sitting inside the car.
Just as well as it was pouring with rain.
£60 but at least it's done with prompt polite efficient service, so I'd recommend them (A.M.T. Auto Electrical Services).
Guess I can go to the supermarket now - so exciting !
