406 HDI TIMING BLT PINNING
[Hi all....
After all my arduous problems with 406 which is still not starting, I thought I might as well try the high pressure pump as I have pretty much tried everything else!
Can anyone give me any pointers as to how to pin the timing please?
Local garage has quoted £175 plus vat to change pump over when I get it

There is abolt hole in the cam pulley,
and there is a hole at back of the starter motor to lock the crank off,
(Pump isnt timed)
There is a Guide somewhere on the Forum, im pretty sure Jasper5 put some info up on this,

Don't know how to check timing to be honest
I would have thought it would have run like a bag of s**t if the timing was out?
Would the pp scan not have picked up if the timing was out?

there is a 8mm? pin behind the starter moter that must be inserted
to check the timing just pit the pin behind the starter motor in and see if the bolt lines up on the cam pulley
a symptom of the timing being out by one tooth is not starting

iirc you can get the Top cambelt cover off with-out removing the engine Mount
if so just turn the cam pulley until you can get the bolt in and locked off- and then check see if you can lock the crankshaft off,
you shouid be able to work out if the timing is out that way,
(Also look at the condition of the cam belt, look and see if there are any missing teeth on the belt )

the crank shaft pin is hard to know if you have it right if you put last so i like to put it in first

Thanks guys.
I managed to get the cover off without removing the engine mount, partly because whoever toolkit off last time had snapped it.
Belt looks in good condition from what I could see as I was running out of light. Gonna see about lining the pins up tomorrow...well later on today now!

i just used a couple of drill bits when i locked mine to do the belt,worked fine

Hi guys.....it's been a while as I had a few other issues but I am now working on gettin this motor going again.....even if it's going to the scrappie!!!
I am waiting on a pump pump coming so started to prepare it for changeover.
I have gotten as far as locking the fly off, took the starter out an someone before me has put 2 marks on the fly which just so happen to line up perfectly when I put the bolt in.
Problem I have though is I can't seem to see anything to lock the camshaft off with. I was told that a bolt hole would line up once the crank was locked but I can't see anywhere to put a bolt through on mine?? There is three small half inch bolts positioned around the camshaft but nothin else?
Any help as always greatly accepted.

There's an 8 mm threaded hole in the cyl head behind the pulley, at about the 8 o'clock position. IIRC the 'hole' in the camshaft pulley is only about 3/4 of a hole, i.e. the bit of the casting your timing pin or bolt passes through isn't a complete circle.
