Well it passed the MOT today without a single comment

I knew about the zorst so had that done on saturday, otherwise it would have failed on that.

I am VERY VERY pleased, my faith is renewed

I tell you what Dai, I was panicking about the handbrake (shite as usual) I was giving it a good 'work out' on the way there this morning and even got the back wheels to lock once

I just wanted to rough up the friction surfaces for the test.

What is it with the 406 handbrake? It feels like all the linkages are made from cast iron and wood and connected with horse hair

D'you know that's the only thing I was worried about when I had mine MoT'd a few weeks ago. Even spoke to the tester about it, but he knows the score, said it was easily good enough. Left me wondering why I have to strain so hard to prevent roll back.

I've tested it by trying to pull off with the handbrake on and she'll drag the back wheels - just one of those things I suppose....

The only other thing that had me mildly concerned was some dodgy wear on the front discs, as the previous set of pads wore down they started to miss a bit near on the outer edge of the inside side of both discs, where the brake wear sensors are, so there was a raised rusty lip where there should be a braking surface. I scraped the worst of it off, then changed the pads anyway, haven't looked whether it's smoothed itself out, or whether it's worn a notch out of the new pads, but i don't really care because the brakes work fine and the tester didn't even mention it

What is it with handbrakes on 406's as mine done work well neither. I've tried a few times to sort mine but it comes coming loose.

It stops roll back but I can drive with the handbrake on fully.

You'd never get a decent handbrake turn out of a 406

I've allways hated the handbrake, gives a nasty clonk when you apply it and never feels like it's going to hold the car. I allways leave in gear on a slope.

well done welly another twelve months of trouble free motoring

i never had a problem with the handbrake on my "6"

but i tried pulling it on on my "7" and all sorts of wierd stuff starts to happen it does everything except having a hand come out of the steering wheel an givin you a slap

Glad to hear it Welton, there's not much to match the sense of relief and smugness as when you've got a year's ticket. As for handbrakes, every car I've had starts off with a cracking handbrake, then I own it, and they seem to give up. The coupe's still ok at the moment though (touches wood)

my rear brakes seemed a bit, well non existent ever since i had the car, i finally got it on the brake tester at work today,

the handbrake does nothing and the rear brakes are doing nothing, a quick look at them confirmed this, the discs are coverd in rust
so i need:
rear calipers
discs
pads
brake shoes
and one adjuster as the n/s/r has totally seized

Sounds familiar mate :/ Except on mine, bits of the rear discs have actually fallen off! Got all the bits needed to fix it up from a local factor, just need to pray the allen bolt things holding the tops of the calipers on can be shifted with an impact driver :/ (tried with an allen key last time and they wouldn't budge!) Oh, and a decent bit of weather in the next few weekends wouldn't go amiss either else I'll more than likely end up having to pay a garage to do it
