Speedometer stops working then starts again!

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Speedometer stops working then starts again!

Post by pugface406lx »

Hello everyone,

I wonder if anyone has had this problem....my 406 2.0HDI (110) yr2000 has a problem which is annoying me....driving along and the speedometer decides to stop working for no apparent reason.....this may happen for a few seconds or even a few minutes....the car noticable jumps as though the power drops a little and when the speedo kicks in again I notice a little jump as if the power comes back again. This is happening quite frequently now....I did change the speedo transducer after somebody said it might be that but it still occurs......any ideas??

I had the exact same problem with my car. The drop in power is a clue that it isn't just an instrument cluster issue. The car goes into low power mode because it thinks the car isn't moving, which means the speedo pulse to the ECU is getting interrupted. You've already replaced the speed sensor (transducer) on the gearbox, so you probably need a new speedo control box. On LHD cars it's located behind the glove box, I'm not sure where they put it on RHD cars.

According to my mechanic, they've never had to replace the control box twice on the same car, Peugeot must have improved the design at some point. I paid ~£90 including labor to have it replaced at a Peugeot garage.

Mine (same model -2001) did it from time to time last year ...and then cut out completely and refused to turnover/start.
Cleaned battery terminals. Restarted OK then- Fine after - fault gone. Less than 12v confusing the digital systems.

Same problem on my 2000 year V6 auto although only very occasionally. No drop in power when it happens. Any suggestions gratefully received although I'll leave it as it is until the problem happens more often.

Not sure if it's related but occasionally the clicking noise for the indicators stops working, although not at the same time as the speedo problem.

If there isn't a drop in power, odds are you have a loose connection somewhere in the gauge cluster. You can have it replaced with a working unit, or you can try and get the solder joints reflowed. Sometimes they're a bit iffy and temperature changes and road vibration can shake them apart.

You can try to do a reset and see if it helps, but it's likely you'll need a new speedo sensor, a new speedo control box or a new BSI (don't know if the latter two are in fact the same unit, though).
