It's the law, apparently
EU law now means that you can't set tracking cookies etc on people's systems without their consent. I'm all for it - it used to be that when I was browsing holiday websites for comparing airline ticket prices, that the buggers would set a tracking cookie, so that the next time I do a search, it bumped the price up or flashed up a message saying that there were very few seats left on that flight. If I went to the Wifely Person's PC and ran the same search on the same site, the original cheap price would appear and suddenly there were loads of seats.
Tracking cookies are also used for the purposes of collecting information about you so that you have advertising targeted at you. This is especially creepy because in order to work this out, websites know what other websites you've been visiting, and then display advertising banners based on this information. If you visit a lot of sites about cars, you tend to get more car parts adverts displayed in your browser. Shudder to think what Puggy's browser advertises to him!
