This day has gone from bad to worse! (I'm off back to bed)

Post by Sonia406 »

Right so, I have the rocker cover gaskets to do, possibly some plastic welding on the cover itself.

For those who came to Pugfest you'll know my starter motor wasn't in the best condition anyway, BUT it was starting, all the time.
It sounded like it was screaming but as I say, it would start each time.

Today, I go out to her. Turn the key. Nothing. Battery flat?!
After leaving the key fully turned she finally started after what seemed an eternity. When she fired up I immediately checked all the lights, nothing on. Nothing seems to of drained the battery. I have come to the conclusion the battery is NOT dead but it is taking everything the battery has got to turn the starter motor and turn the car.
When she finally turns we have a really loud screaming noise come from the starter motor; much louder than at pugfest.

It has to be the starter motor I am sure of it.
The battery was brand new in January this year.

I took a short video of it, the effort it takes to start, I am 99.9% it is the starter motor. Multi meter broke so can't test the battery for voltage.
I tried to hook up PP2000 & even that decided to throw a hissy fit.

And to make matters just that bit worse, today I have the EML come back on (possibly misfiring, engine was shaking violently even though the engine mount was done, but no unusual popping sound from exhaust) and the ABS light came on too... ABS light has gone back out but seriously? FFS

Look away now if you don't like swearing:

When is that temperamental slag going to cut me some f*cking slack?
I said to myself that's it, if after the rocker cover & gaskets don't fix her up, that's it - she's going to be run into the f*cking ground til next May when the MOT is up and what I would be spending on car parts til then will be saving for my HDi - she obviously heard me saying that yesterday as today she's all like 'you ain't running me into the ground woman!!'

I thought that the spark plugs were already swimming in oil, turns out what I saw through the coil pack was not the spark plugs hole. Some manufacturing hole I have been told...

Hi hun, chin up.. 8)

I'm sure its the starter too. When the starter is cranked, it takes around 85% of the battery power to do it. This only leaves 15% to do everything else at the same time. If the car has been stood or not had a run for a while, there is not always enough ooomphh in the battery to turn starter and power the spark plugs, lights etc, so it takes a while to crank. Also means car may have a hissy fit and throw up warning that are not there, just the lack of power from the battery for ECU / BSI etc, so it gets confused, a bit like brain freeze.

One thing at a time, you need to show Miss Pug who is in charge.. Get your starter sorted and take it from there - it may fix some other faults too ( not the gasket though, sorry :( )

Thanks... I have been so angry today and even writing that post earlier I was so so angry... a short diagnostics later which revealed even MORE problems and I can quite happily say, I am actually hysterical

I find it hilarious how one thing leads to another on this car... I despised my exes Renault Espace for this very reason and I think I am starting to hate her for it....
Every week it's a new car part needed - a bit sick and tired of it now to be fair...

Right so diagnostics this evening:

Previous ''Rear RH speed sensor''

Now? 'Rear LH speed sensor'
Isn't that just f*cking hilarious?!

I have absolutely no idea what this means:

Ready for the BIG ONE?

Are ya?!

Dads been over tonight, totally unrelated I know but I asked for his opinion on the car and he's certain too it's the starter, so now I have a handful or two of people shouting 'starter motor' at me I shall bloody well get off my backside and get one
But then that is it...

Anything else breaks or needs replacing and I will run her into the f*cking ground til May and in the mean time save for my HDi I so badly badly want!

Thanks for your words of encouragement boys, maybe it's just her ''time'' for the place in the sky.....
It doesn't help of course it's this weekend the Haynes meet is and well - she timed that perfectly well didn't she?!

Replace the rear wheel hub bearings. That'll cure your intermittent ABS fault - it did it for mine. You can get them brand new on eBay for about £25 each.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110763793619

The plus there is you'll know the wheel bearings are done, and any prospective buyer will also know it's been done, it'll never need doing again, and that counts. I'd buy a slightly scrappy-looking car if I knew the previous owner had bothered replacing important things like the wheel hubs, ABS rings, anti-roll bar droplinks, etc. It's reassuring.

A brand new starter motor can also likely be had for about £50 - £60 off eBay.

I didnt know you could type f*cking with out it getting censored, it must just be f*ck that gets censored :cheesy:

If you find a good auto electrician you can get the starter refurbihsed, i did back when i had the clio it cost £25 and never gave a problem since.

Fix the starter, make sure the battery has a good charge, get it running for a while then connect up the PP2000, flat batteries can throw up a load of silly faults, i can remember connecting the machine to a 607, every fault the car could have it had, once a new battery was fitted, and the car was running i cleared the codes and read them a while later and they were gone.

That's worth knowing... I didn't look at the voltage when I had PP connected last night (I forgot) but the last time I looked it showed a healthy 12.5 volts if I remember right...

If time was on my side I would get an electrician to refurbish the old unit, but what I may do is get a second hand one for £25 (delivered) and then when money and time isn't this tight get an electrician to refurbish the old one as a back up, or is that a stupid idea?

I know someone who breaks Pugs 306s for a living and he has a crate full of stater motors..

IF I can stretch to it (with insurance going out tomorrow) I can get the starter motor delivered Friday, Fit it Saturday, Just maybe I may be able to do something more about the whole Haynes thingy me bob...
