Cleaning Egr Valve

Post by Blocka »

Greeting fellow Peugeot owners,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma as to what to do with my egr valve... As soon as I accelerate quickly my engine management light comes on! I've been told it could be my egr valve! My car is a 406 2.2 136 bhp! Is it worth cleaning it out or replacing it? if so whats the best method of cleaning them out? I've seen the adverts for the spray cleaners but do they actually work! Being a Novice mechanic is it something I could do at home... what parts would I have to remove to spray the cleaner into the egr valve! Is this common fault with this particular model? Could anyone out there offer me anymore tips on what else the problem could be & what else I should look out for!

Really you need to get the car diagnosed on pp2000, engine management light can be caused by many things. but the most common fault for it coming on is the swirl flap diaphragm becoming perished with age (typically fail around ten years old).

I think that incorrect closing of the EGR does not cause a fault (because if you disable it by clamping/bunging the vac supply or by blanking it then no fault occurs). Opening could be different (if it's not closing properly then the MAF reading will be too low).

As OSK says, needs Planet on it really so we know what it's complaining about.

Current: 407 2.2 HDi 170 & C6 2.7 HDi.
Former: 406 1.9 TD; 406 HDi 90; 407 2.2 160; 307cc 180; 508 HDi 140.

+2 get it diagnosed if possible, (whereabouts are you, someone local may help), but try to avoid paying anyone who doesn't REALLY know HDi's.

The most common cause of EML under acceleration on a 2.2 is over-boosting, caused by a vacuum leak somewhere, (quite possibly the swirl flap diaphragm as OSK suggests).

Hi, welcome.

I had this on my 2.2 but only when I went too quick around a sweeping left curve..!!

I replaced the turbo electrovalve and I think it did the trick, although not instantly.

Around 30% of us on here with Hdi's have removed the EGR altogether, some say it is a way of eliminating problems for the future, others have kept theirs as they say it is benificial for the engine - each to their own I guess.

its all guessing till you get it plugged in i can give you a list of what it could be and in the list would be the right thing but how far down the list is it, theres no point messing about spending moneys on things that don't need replacing to try and fix it when it will tell you what needs fixing.
