Front wiper speed

Talk about the 406's electrical system, what wires do what, how to add extra functionality, etc.

Front wiper speed

Post by cesbh92 »

Hi I have just got a 2002 110hp estate
It passed mot with no problems on wed but the wipers seem to be very slow, all settings work including auto, but the normal speed and fast speed seem to be no different.
Is there a relay that could be faulty or something else I need to check?

Many thanks Cliff

Did the original one self-park? There's a switch inside for it but that's handled by the BSI. Does it carry on or stop immediately you turn the switch off?

Another fuse for you to check

Fuse B (these are across the front of the BSI).

Hi thanks for reply
yes the original one self parked OK it would work for a while but was slow and then blow fuse (I replaced the motor with one from a scrappy and now working fine except self parking)
wipers are stopping just under halfway up the window, (I have tried re fitting arms lower but they are then going past the plastic cover on window when sweeping window) just wondering if I could have miss aligned the motor and actuating arms slightly when refitting but would have thought that would then give the same problem with swept area if I move the actuating arms.

In answer to your questions
1) yes the orig motor self parked fine.
2) the fuse B has been replaced it was this one that kept blowing.
3) the blades stop as soon as you turn the wiper switch off.

thanks for your help, I will try a BSI reset to see if that helps but any other suggestions are appreciated

Wiper self parking problems are usually related to earthing problems.

On a full-mux car it's all run by the BSI, the switching goes straight to it and the only earth is on the motor to power it. Why leave it simple when you can make it complicated...

Good to know it was fuse B, the wiring diagrams say fuse D  I thought you might have missed this one as there's another fuse for the wipers in the engine fuse panel, must be worth checking but I'm beginning to suspect you picked up a duff 'un :(

This is in case either you don't have a handbook or the wiring diagrams in the one you have are insane:

Sounds simple but you don't know what position the motor was in when it was removed from the scrapper? it might be out of sync with your wiper arms?

Looks like the OP thought of that one:
