He's only gone done passed his test today, all went swimmingly after last time's failure due to a Bus Driving w**ker failing to signal correctly and leaving my lad in his blind-spot.

I stopped counting the cost of lessons/tests after a bag of sand but it must have cost £1,400.00 now

Time to ring my Insurers to get him added to the T5 policy..........Place yer bets!!!

He was taught by an ex-Ambulance driver who set up as an instructor and DRILLS into his students the need to look well ahead and anticipate the unexpected etc. my lad is not a hot-head so will likely make a nice driver I hope.

my youngest has been on the road for a few months now and he's loving it, costing a fortune in fuel tho as his little 106 is never still.

The thing I tried to instill into my brood, (with varying degrees of success), was to make damn sure other road users could tell what you intended to do, (indicating, road position etc.). This is one facet that driving instructors don't seem to promote enough, IMHO.

I have this problem coming up with my eldest 17 in October and everyone is telling her to dive straight in and do lessons... Problem I see is she's won £1300 since September through singing but only has about £50 left.... Hmmm nice bit of saving done lass .... She has put it to good use though i grant her that.

My point to her is save any money she can once she's getting her esa in September and use myself and the family to take her places (in other words no changes just saving).....Where is passing her test within 6 months going to get her if she can't afford a car or the more expensive insurance..... I'd be interested to hear what your insurance says Welly.

We've put him through a test and he'll then go off to University so won't need to drive for another 4 years to be fair but wanted to get this done early.

The recommended amount of learning hours is 40 now i.e. 20 x 2hr lessons at £45-ish a pop so there's nearly a bag to start with and then you've got the theory test fee £35? the practical is £60 ish and you also have to pay to use the learner car for the lesson....another £60 (to insure the examiner in the car, or something). In my day (here we go) one had 10 lessons and the 10th one was normally the actual driving test. I think there's so much traffic now that driving is primarily about learning hazard perception, oh, and not changing-down through the gears in any case I don't think any of us here would like to learn how to drive in 2014 would we?

Fail the first test and there's likely an 8-week gap before you can get another time slot...in which time you need more lessons to brush up on yer skillz.......very costly.

I don't have the ability to 'teach' it's just not something I can do so private lessons with me were a no-no (and the insurance would be a stinger).

its costing my son £3600 for a 2002 pug 106 with a 1.1 engine, if you can get him on your T5 for 4k go for it.

It's about 6/7 years since my son passed his test. At that time doing the Pass Plus course cost about £100 and reduce the insurance on his hand-me-down 1.4 glof from £1600 to £1200.

yea my elsdest did the pass plus and it dropped his insurance down but it didnt affect the youngest's either way so it was a waste of money for him.

Congratulations to your lad, he should now take a course on exuberance management I passed my test in the days when you had to give hand signals but I think its probably tougher now.

When my lad passed his test the insurance company refused to allow him on our policy for the 407 as it had a turbo, but we live in a high risk area for insurance.
